ANKARA, Turkey - Four pieces of what was believed to be a missile
fell in southeastern Turkey Friday, a Turkish official said. No one
was injured.
The four pieces were found outside the village of Dagyani in
southeastern Sanliurfa province, some 180 miles west of the Iraqi
border, a spokesman for the local governor's office said, speaking
on condition of anonymity.
Turkish television channels showed a cylinder-shaped, metallic
object resembling a missile lying in a field.
U.S. military officers were heading to the region to investigate,
U.S. military spokesman Maj. Bob Thompson said.
On Sunday, two Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from a ship in the
eastern Mediterranean landed in an unpopulated area in Sanliurfa
province without exploding. Pentagon (news - web sites) officials
said they may have malfunctioned in flight. No one was
injured.
Turkey, a NATO (news - web sites) member, has opened its airspace
to U.S. and British warplanes heading toward Iraq (news - web
sites) despite fierce opposition by Turkey's public. Turkey refused
requests to base 62,000 U.S. ground troops in the country.
