I have read reports that many young ppl in Taiwan would rather contribute cash than themselves to protect their country. This is quite sad.

ha..I did not say whelther which NS is better or not , i onli state which one is toughy. Look at our BMTC , machiam like chalet. Our food are pre-pack by FnB singapore. And comparing to the past the discipline system is very much reduce liao. However for taiwan , due to fundings i believe , their BMTC is like shit , their discipline system is very much toughy ( they seems to lack a welfare system there ). All this is wat i heard from relatives who are sent to taiwan , im not been there b4 , thus cant justify with my experience.

Anyone with experience there can pls enlighten us...

BMTC is nice from afar but far from nice lar. Lets put it this way, they give decent facilities, but they train recruits hard. Of course, there is welfare...

From what I've seen in Taiwan, their training is more like Singapore's in the late 70s'. They are more disciplined, strict and drilled. Singapore's training now is more focused on operational tasks and allows soldiers to think for themselves.
But other than that, their training is just like us. I spoke to some of them in the field - they are very much like us in fact, when compared to the Americans, Australians, Thais or those from Brunei. Just my opinion after training in Taiwan twice. This is something which the Taiwanese themselves agree.

One thing I noticed is that their reserve system is nowhere like us. The Taiwanese depend on the fulltime conscripts more, whereas Singapore's main bulk are from the trained reserves. They are just forming proper reserve brigades and practicing recalling them.

their system involves 2 yrs full time service and 3 yrs in reserves…... i understand that for people going to the university, they are allowed to defer until they graduate…..
