Today's Straits Times reported the Malaysian Chief of Navy as
saying that Malaysia is keen to work with Singapore to enhance the
safety and security in waters off Pedra Branca.
This is made more urgent considering the recent accident between
two merchant vessels in the waters off the disputed island.
"He said the busy sea route near Pedra Branca was prone to
accidents.
We have always considered Pulau Batu Putih as belonging to
Malaysia, and we are responsible for ensuring security. Even though
we are not stationed near Pulau Batu Putih, we will enter the area
to maintain security should anything crop up,' he was quoted as
saying by Sin Chew Daily"
There seem to be some change towards a more diplomatic tone; which
could lead to some possible co-operation in the waters not within
the immediate vicinity of Pedra Branca; and allowing for joint
co-operation of the entire general area in the vicinity of this
disputed island.
There has been a long fraternity of co-operation between the two
navies, as well as the peoples of both countries.
Any co-operation between the two Navies will not influence the
outcome of the judgement of the ICJ proceeding to decide on the
ownership of this island.
With co-operation as a first step,. this might lead to a further
mutual respect towards each other's interests.
This change of tone during the Malaysian DPM Badawi temporary
position of being the Malaysian Prime Minister (in the absence of
Dr Mahatir who is on vacation), can only provide a good impetus for
further improvement of ties between reasonable peoples from both
sides.
