I was wondering, and I'd like to hear you all out...are our current rucksacks adequate? Is it time for a change? I'm talking about the standard-issue rucks that we carried in NS, not the ALICE rucks. I feel that we should have a bigger ruck at times though. Seems like we can't really put rations and additional gear if we wanted to....but that's just my opinion.

Another issue I was wonder was about our web gear. I was thinking that we could adopt the Load Bearing Equipment (LBE) style of SBO that the U.S. is using. Plus a Camelbak-like hydration system.

I think them already changing our fullpacks and webbing. last heard that it's all camo-style instead of the typical olive green. Anyone can confirm that? I dunno about size but I heard it's got lots of pockets and can be open from the side too. The webbing's bigger this time and got pockets on the side slings.

For camelbak thingy, I dunno about your unit but our unit, we are allow to use it in the field if we have it, but it's not a standard issue.... meaning you have to buy them if you want.

seriously, the rucksack is adequate... i don't fancy a larger one at all. there's always the temptation to stuff all the pockets and compartments full of nonsense and weigh u down.

the point is to travel light... just carry the bare essentials... field isn't exactly a picnic. Mr. Green hee... but we all learn how to stuff the packs full of non-essential luxury items by and by...

as for the SBO, just look at any reservist NSman's SBO... confirm non-standard one... i like the current flexibility. just go down to the gift shop or beach road and buy the stuff u need, then attach then.

mine is unique too... padded strap, added compartments, plastic buckles, etc etc... oh... camel bak too...

i believe its impottant to give people the responsibility over their own equipment. they tend to take care of it more if they paid to customise it themselves.

also, give them the flexibility, and u'll get the most amazing design at the end of the day...

think the rucksack or the so call field pack is ok. but they can always make some improvements to it. for example the Israeli armed forces do have a great range of combat vest. they had the vest and the bag pack in one vest.

but for the saf's new SBO, it seems to follow the us design in terms of appearance, adaptable protection etc... let's jus wait and see when it come out as a standard issue to the whole of saf.

Wow, that's nice, some different shades of green for once. So they allow for Camelbaks now huh? I rememeber it wasn't that popular 8 years ago. It's a good concept though. we could do away with those two canteens and replace it with pouches to hold additional items. Very Happy

I thought the 21st Div are made up of mostly Guards units. I was from 21Div a long time ago, when it was just formed.

tot the 21div is a regular unit. all regulars.
so perhaps they decided to changed.
the infantry uits are in place, the first armour bn in place too.

A division of regular? wow...I dun think so...the only army units that I know that are made up of regulars are the SOF and maybe Intelligence...

Any ex or current grenadiers out there? I've often wondered how they carry their grenades in a real operational situation. Seems that it comes in a bandolier of 6 rds...Does the SAF issue grenadier vests at all?

I guess our field packs are alright...we just have to get rid of the running shoes and replace it with a more realistic load...rations or something that you would bring to a real situation....I was thinking that we could also repalce our entrenching tool (ET), but I guess a chungkul is always better than a spade/chungkul hybrid, given our terrain.

You mean you guys are still carrying running shoes? I've not pack running shoes since BMT liao......... Wow your unit sabo sia...

At least our ET tools are not bad if we maintain and sharpen the blade. I heard some army are using foldable ET tools and are complaining about it being fragile and weak.

Hahaha!! Laughing No, we left out the running shoes after BMT already; I use the ALICE ruck occasionally though... and in place of running shoes came rations, blanks, smoke grenades, and if you're (un) lucky, you get the radio....etc...you know the drill... Wink That's the real combat load we gotta train with halfway thru' BMT (not the ALICE ruck...just field pack)...at least just once to get a taste of it. Its like SAW and M203 training...they left that out of BMT now...They should have just kept that in as a part of BMT training...even a simple familiarization course would be good enough.

I agree with you on the ET tool. This is one thing that we haven't found an alternative for...but it's useful, since the ET stick could be fashioned out of any loose wood or even bamboo in an emergency out in the field. A foldable ET tool won't be able to do that.

Of course not. But I know they dun ask you to ask full pack and fight. It's not combat effective. They only train you physically with full pack. I'm just complaining about full pack.

If they ask me to ask full pack and fight, I tell them to train Combat Maid to carry my load. hahahahaha Laughing
