If you know the IP address, just ping it straight away.

Go to Start, Run, and type in cmd.

Type in ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (IP address). If it has lesser than 3 digits, don't need to add 0 in front. Just write it as it is. Like 1.2.3.4

If you don't know, type in ping www.thewebsite.com (replaced thewebsite.com with the correct website)

If you are sharing files, you ping it to make sure that you are sharing with the correct person.

It can also help you check how fast is your connection with a particular website. If you are facing connections problem, it can help you too.

It can help you in terms of security, though these will too advanced for a home user.

no la, i just did a "ping /?" nia....

"ipconfig /all" is also another essential tool for network troubleshooting, as highlighted by F|. the old days of winipcfg is gone though... Rolling Eyes
