What kind of ssytem are you using? If yours is OEM, then opening
the case will void the warranty. So be careful.
If its a DIY, its better to just buy a new drive. Go down to Sim
Lim Square and purchase any optical drive. Most are at bargain
prices. $30 for a Samsung CD-RW or spend a bit more like $50 can
get you a combo drive. DVD-RW costs $70+.
Open the case both side, remove the 4-pin molex connector on the
drive and remove the IDE ribbon cable. Then unscrew the drive,
slide it out from the front. Replace the new drive into the now
empty slot. Replace the ribbon cable and 4-pin molex. Power on the
system. Press DEL key to get into BIOS. If BIOS detects the new
optical drive, you are home free. Press F10 to save the settings.
Job done. Simple isn't it?

If your system has 2 optical drives on the same ribbon cable, then
you need to configure the drive at the end of the chain as MASTER
and the other as SLAVE by adjusting the jumper cap.
