jenn_y SG some experts may have acquired knowledge that is difficult to describe in words. does this mean that other ways of knowing (reason, emotion, and perception) play a more important role than language in knowing how to do something?
Icemoon SG go read up on Heidegger and Wittgenstein. Heidegger's 'ready to hand' is about perception. Not to forget Wittgenstein and his language games. These will help you formulate angles and tackle the question.
jenn_y SG i have read about the language game, but i do not see how it demonstrates that language play a role in knowing how to do something. what role does language, emotion, perception, and reason play in knowing how to ride a bike?
[email protected] SG i would say yes. that explains why some people are able to pick up things more easily than others. But language, although inadequate in conveying all the non-linguistic aspects of a skill, is often the only medium we have of trying to explain how to pick up a skill.
jenn_y SG i've got my outline: I. Introduction 1. What is knowing how? 2. Differentiate between knowing that and knowing how 3. Thesis: Language play an important role in knowing how to do something II. Knowing How and WOK 1. Knowing how and Perception 2. Knowing how and Reason 3. Knowing how and Emotion 4. Knowing how and Language III. Language and other WOK 1. Language and Perception 2. Language and Reason 3. Language and Emotion IV. Conclusion if i were to tell u how to ride a bicycle, would u know how to do so right away? or do u have to learn how to ride a bicycle. thus, what role does language play then in knowing how to do something?
