The popularity of five-door models is evident at every price point
- $50,000, $60,000 and $70,000.
But three models were at the forefront of this rear-end revival
because of their spacious interiors and versatile seating - the
Honda Jazz, Mitsubishi Colt and Hyundai Matrix. Together, they made
up almost half of all Cat A hatchbacks sold from January to
November 2004. Throw in the Hyundai Getz and the total proportion
is almost two-thirds.

Look out for
In 2005, the benchmark will still be the Honda Jazz for its
refinement. The Hyundai Matrix will be the other favourite because
of its pricing. But these two ageing models are facing fierce
competition and at all price points.
The perky Mazda2, rakish Chevrolet Optra5 and the coming Suzuki
Swift are revving their engines in the wings. The Chevrolet Aveo is
also carving out a niche for itself as the 'cheapest of the premium
minis'.
Other models to look out for are the new Mitsubishi Colt Plus, an
upsized version of the Colt. Along with the exciting Ralliart Colt
Plus Turbo, this Mitsubishi will have more space and more
power.
Also interesting will be the budget mini segment, with the
diminutive Hyundai Getz and Kia Picanto gunning to gain more market
share with their cute looks and affordable pricing.
Best buys
The Hyundai Matrix will still be a good buy in 2005 because for a
mere $60,000, you get mini-MPV spaciousness equal to a 1.6-litre
sedan plus a more commanding ride height. But the most desirable
are the more expensive Honda Jazz with its excellent handling, and
the Mitsubishi Colt Plus Turbo for its sheer power.
