all about coelacanth

The strange-looking coelacanth is considered to be a living fossil.
They were thought have been extinct since the end of the cretaceous
period over 65 million years ago. Fossils of the fish have been
found that date back over 410 million years. But in 1938, a local
fisherman caught a live coelacanth off the coast of South Africa. A
second specimen was discovered in 1952 off the coast of the the
Comoro islands. Since then, live coelacanths have been sighted and
photographed in the wild.Coelacanths (pronounced See-la-canths) or
lobe-fins are a strange group of fishes that appeared 300 million
years ago and until very recently were believed to have been
extinct for at least 50 million years. One of the greatest
surprises in the field of science came about when a living
Coelacanth was captured off the southern coast of Africa in 1937.
Named Latimeria chalumnae, The excitement is due to the fact that
the capture of the fish is about equivalent to the sudden
appearance of a live dinosaur in Louisiana or North Carolina.
