I notice that manufacturers are currently designing their cars
to provoke a reaction, some in the name of forging brand identity
and making their cars appeal to the young and young-at-heart. They
figured that nobody wants to buy a car which makes them look
old.
Some of them look radical (Renault Megane), a few look like they've
been drawn with just rulers and set squares (Land Rovers) while
others look like complete disasters (Pontiak Aztek).
It seems to be the look in vogue after the latest Ford models were
panned for being too bland, but I cannot stand tolerate cars being
designed radically just for that purpose, without (paradoxically)
paying attention to conventional ideas of proportion and beauty.
Pillar-mounted taillamps are fine but not queer bootlines (BMW).
The 612 Scaglietti has undersized wheels while Renault's Vel Satis
looks terrible compared to the Opel Signum.
So among the current cars, which ones do
you think will stand the test of time like the E-Type and the 300
SLR?
