The poor guy would have impacted earth at around 120Kph-130Kph,
which is the equivalent of a body impact in a car accident.
Depending on what kind of ground he landed on, the body can be
quite unsightly. In most cases, brain matter will be splattered
around the body, as the cranium (or skull) cracks open on impact
even with helmet on.
Death will have been instantaneous, as the impact will knock him
unconscious, and thereafter cardiac arrest sets in due to internal
bleeding from ruptured organs and brain trauma.
It is sad, but I think its either that his time was up, or he got
careless with parachute packing.
