Some players automatically look for the srt file to play with
the video. If it's not available, the video will still play. If you
put it elsewhere, chances are the video will play minus the subs.
The player should come with a function that asks you where to
locate the srt and load the subs, which you have to manually point
out where, then restart the video to play it with the subs.
