It's very irrititating to see unnecessary emoticons popping up.
They should use parentheses or asterisks for keyboard shortcuts
that represent emoticons.
For example, I have an emoticon which represents laughing. The
keyboard shortcut is '(laugh)'.
Likewise, the keyboard shortcut for my 'eating' emoticon is
'*eat'.
That way, I won't have any unnecessary emoticons popping up in my
conversations.
