Because otherwise we would sink to the level of vigilantism. Even though he pleaded guilty and the sentencing is mandatory, he still has to be put through a proper trial in order to get all the facts of the case right and to listen to his side of the story in order to show fairness on our part.

You may say that the death penalty isn't fair, but hey, that was the path he chose.

I dont think he had a trial at all. He just pleaded guilty if I'm not wrong. And if you look at the Misuse of Drugs Act, it's mainly based on presumptions. So there appears to be a reversal of the burden of proof. That's generally abhorrent in the civilised world. Really, the Prosecution should ideally have to work a lot harder for some of the convictions they secure - based on guilty pleas. They do seem to get these too cheaply, through the use of presumptions instead of actually having to prove their case in Court.

Actually that's not quite correct. There is a lot of coverage in the Australian press about the American death row. Not a lot of it is supportive and some is quite critical. Might be a good idea to take the head out of the *** and have a look at what's going on before jumping to that conclusion.
