Buy car for only 13-15 months of use

Hi all,

I'm new.

I want to buy a car and it's only used for 13-16 months in Singapore as I will leave Singapore for Malaysia for a long term assignment.

below are my point of consideration:
1) reliable car because I will travel between KL and Singapore quite ofen during the next 13-16 months.
2) good resales value after 13-16 months.

Should I buy a used car or a new car?
I'm interested in buying a new car. Currently, I'm checking out new Toyota VIOS 1.5E.

Any comment? Pl Advise.

If you intent to use only for 13-16mths, prepare to loss alot of value for your car when u resell.

Somemore, u travel often to Malaysia, so I believe the mileage will be quite high, so the resale value will be affected as well.

Some bros have experienced car thefts in My, since u go so often, izzit safe to drive your own new car for work in My???

just go n get long term rental, got insurance, stolen not so heart pain. 13-15 months is not a long time, so get rental. Smile

which rental company? I checked hertz etc, it takes a few thousands per month to rent a car.

I will travel to KL once or twice a month.

Budge is not a problem as long as after 13 months, I wil not lose a lot of money and I have a reliable car to travel between KL and SG.

Define lose a lot of money. Buying a car will definately loss a lot of money. It is only a matter of magnitude. Typically, a new car depreciate the most. If you only need the car once in a while, then rental would probably be better. Else, if you want to buy a car, resale would minimize cost, but it depends on how well you can negotiate and knows about the car value.

Since u r intending to get a car..get it lor..new car or 2nd hand car..but register it under red plate (OPC). Since u driving it to m'sia very frequent,this is one of the most budget way..haha..Juz get urself out of SG before 7am and return back to SG after 7pm,den can liao..
Road tax cheap cheap..car oso cheap cheap..insurance oso cheap cheap

I work in Singapore but during weekend, I woudl like to go to KL for visit for once or twice a month. (so, red plate gone case ;-) )

Initially I thought of renting a car, but it costs me around 15K+ for 12 months and my friend told me that if you buy a new car, it will lose around 5K if you sell it after 13 months.

Please advise.

I seriously doubt that you will lose only 5K for a new car for a new VIOS for 13mths. OTR price is roughly 60K. So, you guess yourself how much you can sell after 13 months.

This is a very tricky situation.

If you buy a new car, you will definitely lose money (just a matter of how much as one reader responded) but at least you would have the ease of mind that the car would, highly likely, not give you problem during these 13-15 mths.

But if you buy a used car to save some money, you might end up losing more money or just as much, if your used car give you problems during this period.

So, you have to take into account these factors before deciding.

Wah.. in other words, losing 10K plus is a definite case if I want to drive for 13 months.

Now I have 2 options: (used car, no lah, I had a bad experience, will cry!!!)
a) renting a car
b) buy a new car

If by rental, anyone got lobang or good recommendation. Should I go for Hertz, Avis rental companies?

You can try the followings rental companies for long term rental:

or you can also find long term rental from yahoo auctions sg.auctions.yahoo.com and search under "rental".

There are car owners, 2nd hand car dealers renting out their cars... but do check the insurance coverage to protect yourself.
