Do you all think that Singapore got the ability to manufacture and produce our own brand of cars?
since some developing countries like malaysia,indonesia,china and india already have their own brand of cars??
although the market here in singapore is relatively small,but our product quality is already well trusted by most countries..

BUT main problem..labour and manufacturing cost...

Singapore Mainland got land space problem…but what if the govt willing to give up 2 or 3 southern islands to the car manufacturing plants cum a test drive circuit???

if a singapore car is actually made there would definatley be a partriotc person who will buy one even if its overseas

malaysian students buy protons overseas even though its overpriced by quite abit (about 6k difference) from a corolla or lancer thats very similar in specs

to manufacture a new car and to brand it and market it is no easy task.

Beside the initial R&D, all the parts will have to be make and then assemble.
So who will be willing to come out with all these hundreds of millions of money for such risky start-up.??

Unless, can tied-up with anther established name, I think will be very very hard.

well..it will be a tough starting..but remember..s'pore is very good at following successful countries footsteps..especially Japan,USA and Europe..

so i think can 1 lah...if we are very determine...even our neighbouring friends abit slacker than us,oso can produce car liao..y not us?hehe..maybe follow our neighbour lor,manufacture body parts...but engine use other brand 1..hahaha

and we brand it FAIRPRICE..??

Good thinking there guys. But I think what Singapore wants to do is not build their own brand. Maybe much later but what they really want to do is to bring in car manufacturers so that it can boost the economy and create more jobs. Why want to create our own brand and compete in the tough market? By cutting off 2nd hand car dealers it would seem more profitable to the car manufacturers mah. All these are already planned for. That's why the reduce in interest for new car and all the rest of the things that made buying new cars more affordable. Well at least that's my speculation lah. Dunno true or not also. Mr. Green

Positive thinking: We can get Singapore Technology to do it, because they have the resources, and are already manufacturing to sell overseas. Overall the car design will be modelled after SG preference, e.g. super aircon, and claymore mine anti-theft when car cross the causeway.

Negative thinking: We can't even manufacture our own local car accumulator. Nor tyres, nor windscreen, every damn thing is imported.

Anyway, labour cost is damn high here. You hire malaysians also not cost effective for production/assembly line, because car assembly is quite specialised. People want latest model fast, Singapore industry is nortorious for taking damn long to conceptualize product from drawing board to real product on the shelf.
