I REFER to the article, 'PM Lee to meet Indonesian President in
Bali today' (ST, Oct 3).
My heart goes out to the victims of the recent Bali bomb blasts and
their families. I agree with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that we
should be strong and not 'concede' to the terrorists.
As a citizen, I support our leaders' decision to proceed with the
Bali retreat with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the
Indonesian ministers this week. I respect their courage.
We should indeed continue to support our Indonesian counterparts in
their efforts to recover and battle against our common foe, the
terrorists.
As a Singaporean, I am also concerned about the safety of our
leaders as PM Lee, along with our key Cabinet ministers - Foreign
Affairs Minister George Yeo, Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang and
Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean will be present together in Bali,
the two-time target of terrorists.
I share the hope that this retreat will enable our countries to
further strengthen our ties of friendship and boost our efforts in
jointly countering the threats of terrorism.
In Singapore, we should continue to build our defences and
preparedness against the eventual terrorist attack. Vigilance and
resilience are essential in this long-term battle against
terrorism.
We citizens can do our part in being alert to threats and preparing
for emergencies.
We have fire drills regularly. We should also have regular defence
drills so that our people will be better prepared against terrorist
attacks and the aftermath.
