New marriages are dissolving at a higher rate compared to those in
the past, announced the Ministry of Social and Family Development
(MSF) last week (Apr 6).
It was reported that among those who married in 2003, 16.1 per cent
dissolved their marriage by the 10th year. This is significantly
higher than the 8.7 per cent of the 1987 cohort who had dissolved
their marriage by that time.
Younger grooms, aged between 20 and 24 years old, also had a higher
proportion of dissolved marriages.
The New Paper spoke to marriage counsellor Evelyn Khong, who is a
consultant at the Fei Yue Community Services, who gave some tips on
how to sustain a marriage.
Ms Khong said: "It is important for newlyweds to know that the
courtship doesn't end on the wedding day. It should be a continued
effort to keep the relationship strong. It is always a work in
progress."
