Using own car is not just a cost of rental in concern, own car need own maintenance, own mileage clocked on the car, own change of wear and tear, and own cost of repair, and at the end of ownself sell it at low price.

Uber/Grab is just another option avaliable be it for driver or passenger, grabhitch for me is just try out for the fun and experience of it. To do or not to do I'll still be driving my own car without any stress in terms of financial, been driving for more than 20 over years I only afford my car well within my comfort zone. Big luxury car definately not in my range, anyway just sharing what I have.

From the way I look at it, using own car may be cheaper than renting from pte if driving uber/grab and lesser stress. No loan debt free and end of the day this car actual cost is only $4800 for 15months usage(not yet include roadtax/insurance/petrol etc). Grabhitch is not regular in daily basis cos not always get a match same timing same destination.

ur car cost should be be 12K + 4.8K mah....

anyway, uber advertised on newspaper that they guarantee their driver can earn $5000/month for first 3 months...

but after deducting 20% commission, another 1500 for rentral, another 500 for petrol (should be more?), left only 2000/month.....

In other countries, where car is cheap, it is wise to use own vehicle, but in Singapore, unless you are driving a going to scrap car, using own car to drive for apps is never a wise one, more so in term of economy of scale.

Sorry I think I made a mistake here, totally forgot the $12K from my tradein. That old car bght at year 2008 was $18K after LTA rebate and after used for almost 8yrs still can fetch $12K is like a bonus to me, no debt no loan. My actual cash upfront for this 1yr+ leftover toyota rush is a bit lesser than $15K fully settled also. Also from OPC to normal plate I think is same trade off and stress free I guess, no need to worry about eDay license.

Best is public transport, no need smlj care about car anymore, smlj trade in or trade out, if you are just a normal working class guy, public transport in Singapore is the most efficient and effective ways of travelling at the lowest cost.

There is study that those who drive tend to have more medical problem than those who walk to take public transport.

Hi all, i am also very keen to be a td. I like the freedom and working at my own pace. However, my wife is not so supportive. Main concern is worrying abt pay CPF housing loan. I have totally lost interest in my current job. I know i will be happier being a td but not for my wife....

push everything to public transport until MRT get so full that it breakdown anytime and bus timing also no good unless operators can offer salaries of $5k a month maybe it time to give taxi and goto drive bus.

i see u everywhere. try doing it part time first.

OTOT jobs ain't for everyone, esp so if u are not the desciplined type. OTOT also means irregular income.

U do lose out on being a employed salaried person, such as AL, bonus, employee CPF etc, but for your housing loan, u'll need to top up cash. or pay by cash, or self contribute CPF (not so popular option)

Hanor hanor, drive taxi is like progressing backward, you should progress forward, like SMRT BUS just announced 20% increase in pay, so if you are new the pay is about $2,000 liao, + allowances and Overtime..wow, can reach 3k liao

And senior bus driver can hv basic salary of 3,400. Still drive smlj taxi?? and for apps drivers, these are mostly lost sheep lured into a den and waiting for slaughter.

Taxi driving is not all fun. On the contrary, there is very little freedom esp if you have family to feed and housing loans to pay. Dun see those Ah lau TDs like bowah at the coffeeshop enjoying their kopi. They are retired and got nothing better to do.

You may think you have freedom, but you start everyday in debt already and sometimes take more than half a day to cover your debt. Sick also must drive. So, for a TD, your freedom comes at a price of about $5+ an hour.

Still, if you believe you will like it, then go ahead lah. Don't think so much.

Like all jobs got good and bad. Some drive for a day and give up. Some drive for 30 years. Depends on ur character lah. And dun forget to leave some pax for bo tak chek lau unker TD like me to tan jiak hor.

i always thought that td job is carefree, no need to work under boss supervision, no office politics, get to explore new places in spore, get to eat food at different places, can run errands whenever they like, sometimes can drive back to parents place to visit them or drive them out for makan or outing, etc....

I always hope i can drive 12hr day shift on 5 wkdays and rest on wkends. But if i dun want to be a hirer, i thk it is extremely difficult to find one suitable hirer near my place snd willing to let me drive day shift and only 5 days. And i always worried that if i am just a relief driver, i can anytime lose my job if hirer dun like me or if we cannot get along.
