they dont study the brands.. they study the components. Some painkillers may contain a combination of these components, while some dont. I forgotten wat it was Embarassed

dear doc,

my dad woke up with very red eye today... and its only on one side of the eyeball... it looks like it was bleeding kind of redness... but then he say it's not itchy or painful.... any idea why is this so? and what can we do for him?

Conjuctivitis? I also have this once before. Not itchy, but my eyes was like crying all the time.

eh.. not sure how does conjuctivitis looks like...
but his is only on the left side of his left eyeball leh.... the whites on the right side of the eyeball is still clear lor...
and his is not like those with red threads kind lor... it's like bleeding type.... conjuctivitis is also like that?

See an eye doctor better. Last time the doctor says if I come later, my eyes would be gone case.

hi ah goon,
u can visit your family doc for a start, then see what he/she says.

if it still persists, then ask ur family doc to refer ur dad to an eye doc. its cheaper that way, but one disadvantage is that will have to wait.

alternatively, u can go and search in yellow pages, and look for eye doctors...one thing is, their consultation fees would b much higher.

Don't need SNEC. Normal eye clinic will do. Last time I see the usual GP, he referred me to the eye doctor.

The fees not cheap though. Consultation plus the eye drops cost almost $200.

And need to go back for a few checkups, depending on how serious the condition. If you are staying near Ang Mo Kio, there is an eye clinic there. But the clinic not opened on Sundays.

1) no discharge or anything
2) he went to sleep and next morning when he wakes up, it's already like that
3) yup, first time he's having such a problem
4) patches of blood
5) a lot of medical problems leh... he always have to eat like 20-30 tablets a day one.. got diabetes, high blood pressure, heart underwent stenting 2 years back. he's also seeing an eye doc every 6 mths or so... cos he's a taxi driver and is already over 65...

This sounds very serious. Tell me more about the red eye. Is the whole of the eye fully reddish, encircling the whole area? From the way you describe it, it sounds like glaucoma, but I would do well, if you can get a picture for me.

Acute, painless, one-sided red eye suggests glaucoma, and requires immediate ophthalmologist intervention. Diabetes can lead to glaucoma as it is one of the complication.

it's not the whole eye.... it's only the left side of the eyeball... the right side of the eyeball is still white....

we keep telling him to go and see doc but he keep insisting that it's ok one... argh! and erm, do u know what is glaucoma call in chinese? then at least i can tell him that it may be caused by diabetes mah...

Diabetes occludes the small vessels in the eye (this complication worsens and progresses with longer duration of diabetes; how long has your father had diabetes?) and when these vessels are near-death, they call out for help by releasing chemicals to make more blood vessels, and these when occur in the iris of the eye, causes compression and swelling towards the drainage area of the fluids in the eye, leading to accumulation of the fluid and increasing in pressure. This pressure can press on the optic disk and lead to blindness. Does he have any blurring of vision?

My other diagnosis would include a condition called subconjunctival hemorrhage (bleeding under the conjunctiva, but this is more prominent in trauma especially after a punch) or an episcleritis (but there is no pain, so it reduces the likelihood)...

he had diabetes for as long as i can remember...
i checked up the web on glaucoma and saw how they can detect it...
hmm... i think his appointment at snec is for checking this lor... he was given eyedrops for it also...
so far, he say everything is ok lor... and his eyes is not swollen...
but his eye does look like he got punched.... but no pain nia...
