Otitis Externa

It's best to leave your ear alone and not dig it with cotton buds as this will only cause trauma to the ear drum. This is so because you have a blind access when carrying out this blunt procedure. Worst is, there are certain people who would use metal diggers or matchsticks to dig their ear. Trauma to the external auditory canal is very common for people who adopts such practice, hence leading to recurrent infection of the external ear, which may progress to involve the middle ear.

The ear has it's own cleansing mechanism, a simple rub with a wet cloth after bathing over the exposed area of the ear would suffice.

Haemorrhoids (Piles)

This is a rather common problem especially nowadays. Increased body weight and prolonged straining in the toilet are two of the main causative factors that exacerbate this condition.

The vessels (veins) in the anal mucosa are collectively clumped underneath and under normal condition appear as soft bulges which provides the cushioning effect for the stools to be passed out. Characteristically, there are three of them located at 3, 7 and 11 o clock positions when the person is lying supine.

Under great pressure and compression from straining of stools (from constipation), the veins will lose its flexibility and the elastic muscles that holds them in location will also give way. The veins will balloon outwards from the normal soft bulge and pushes it out further more making the small bulge into a big unsupported lump.

Depending on severity, the lump will be forced to escape from the anus after pooping and fresh red blood will be passed out, often noticed by the person through wiping with toilet tissue or in the toilet bowl. If it is minor, the lump may return to its normal location by itself, but if it is major, it may not.

If you are suffering from this condition, it's best to seek a GP's help to acquire certain cream and medication that aids in the vessel's integrity and prevent bacterial infection of the perianal area. Start to switch to soft diet, reduce intake of red meat or anything hard. Drink more fluids, take more fiber and don't retain poop for a long time as this will only exacerbate the condition. Exercise often to reduce weight.

Do you know that our kidneys concentrates urine at night while we sleep. This is so since we don't drink any water at night, and by that the kidney conserves the remaining water that passes through it making the production of urine highly concentrated and extremely yellowish.

Take at least 2 glasses of lukewarm water before you start your daily activity, as the prolonged concentration of urine without dilution through water is a risk to developing kidney stones.

Silent Killer = Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

This is perhaps one of the most fearful disease to acquire, even though most people feel they are fine with it, since it manifest typically no symptoms at all, even though, there may be a slight headache, which people attribute it to stresses from daily work and family life.

They are only aware of their own problems when they go for an unrelated health check-up which the doctor may pick it up if he were to do a BP check. Allergic Rhinitis

Seeing that many in my clinic complains about having nose block and watery discharge from their nose accompanied with fever and the common flu, I'd like to dedicate this post to subarugal, huiz, starblue and any of those who have this condition.

Allergic rhinitis is by itself self explanatory. The main cause is allergy, and the main triggering factors are the omnipresent dust mites (Dermatophagoides pterrynosinus), house dust, animal dander and feathers. The food we eat may have connection to this condition, but is rarely the compounding factors to the complains.

There are two main subcategory for allergic rhinitis, that is seasonal and perennial. Seasonal is episodic, occuring only at a certain season and hence is more common to the countries with 4 seasons. Perennial occurs all year round, and is more relevant to the tropical and subtropical countries, especially Singapore and Malaysia.

The common triad symptoms or complains by patients with allergic rhinitis would be nose block, watery discharge and episodic sneezing. This condition gets particularly worse when the patient suffers from a viral cold or predisposed to a cold weather or environment (based on normal physiological changes which may exacerbate the symptoms).

The problem is after all troublesome, as it not only affects the nose, but also the eyes, ears and throat because of the proximity of such organs to the affected site. Itchiness of the eyes, mild hearing loss in the ears and itchy throat (postnasal drips) are among the several complains attained from patients.

Patients who are proned to such rhinitis condition will also present with sinusitis as both the mucosal lining for the nose and the sinuses are similar in question and hence favors the spread of inflammation throughout the close proximity and exaggerate the problem (triad symptoms).

How Allergy Occurs

Type 1 Hypersensitivity

You have to understand that allergy to a certain allergen that trigger your "blocked nose" in the first place happens throughout your life (whenever you are exposed to it).

Steroidal medications (they are safe) are for symptomatic relief (they treat the symptoms, they don't cure the disease). Hence once you are relieved symptomatically, there is an inevitable return of such symptoms once exposed to the things that you are allergic to. The body has these cells known as mast cells that release histamines in huge amount to trigger off such allergic symptoms. The thing is that the antibody IgE (which is the key to opening the door for the release of histamines by mast cells) is attached to mast cells after the first exposure to such allergens. Such attachment increases the rapidity of histamine release because they are already attached to the lock. What it needs is an allergen to sit on top of them (ref IgE) and turn them to open the door. Hence the analogy is that the mast cells are the door that contains histamine in the inside, the IgE is the key and the allergens are the hands that turn the key to open the door. (Note that none of the medications used can remove these IgE, antihistamines work by inhibiting the histamine chemical's effects on the receptors. Histamines once released will find their receptors and sit on them leading to allergic symptoms. Your loratidine works in such a way that it sits on these receptors first, but the magic is that they do not cause an effect. The histamines in the body would then be unable to sit on the receptors for they have been occupied. Steroids on the other hand works by easing up the bronchial muscles, reducing the inflammation and clearing the inflammatory chemicals from the site of the allergy, hence helping to reduce the symptoms).

The best way or the first line treatment is to avoid the things that you are allergic to. Remove your carpet if you have one in your bedroom or your house, keep your curtains clean (wash them weekly), reduce the number of pillows (hence the covering) or mattresses in your room, if you have pets and if you are allergic to their danders, its time to consider letting them out rather than in the house (if they are house pets), etc.

The severity of your blocked nose dictates the course and frequency of medication you will be put on. Your's is a type of allergy known as perrenial allergic rhinitis (happening throughout the year when exposed to certain chemicals or dust that you are allergic to). There is another one known as seasonal allergic rhinitis (but this happens more often in countries that have four seasons, and their blocked and irritatations of the nose comes only in particularly one specific season repeated annually). As yours is yearly, you would often face these symptoms frequently.

Heed your ENT specialist advice on your medications intake and you will be fine.

Recently went to an nutrition seminar and some topics was present but i didn't catch it well. Now i am having some blur etc... heee...

- In-completion of nutrients caused inability to burn fats ?
- what is AGES (advance Glycosylation ...)
- certain stages of diabetic insulin injection is probited ?
- Excess sugar intake, where did all the sugar go to in body ?
- and a friend told me in take of protein powder help to build stronger gastric wall ? Is it true ?

but i was told or advise to take up some multi vitamins for my nose issue.
and surprisingly it helps. Recently my nose are quite ok..
Especially now i am able to resist night shower with no cold / flu problem. Is it medically proven vitamin helps ?? Rolling Eyes

Sugar gets absorbed from the intestines and enter the blood circulation. It gets distributed to the organs that need them, the brain, the muscles, the liver for storage as glycogen and the fat cells. Excess of this glucose are stored in the liver or converted to other food compounds. They never get excreted in the urine as the threshold for glucose to enter the urine is pretty sufficient or should I say high, that once this threshold rule is broken, it is possible to say that the patient is suffering from diabetes mellitus. But it is normally found in pregnancy so it depends on the condition. Wink

keyword to look out for is may. Most product claim to help lose weight, but if u read carefully, it says "XXX may help lose weight...etc"
