Operating a Fire Extinguisher

1) Pull out safety device of fire extinguisher - Hold the extinguisher in an upright position. Pull out the safety device which is fitted to prevent accidental discharge.

2) Aim nozzle at base of fire - Aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire. Keep a safe distance of about 1 to 1.5 metres away from the fire.

3) Squeeze top lever of fire extinguisher - Press the top lever of the extinguisher.

4) Direct discharge at fire using sweeping motion - Use a sweeping motion to allow discharge to be directed over the entire area of the fire.

5) Open all windows to allow sufficient ventilation - When the fire is extinguished, open all doors and windows to ventilate the area.

Choosing a Fire Extinguisher

Water Extinguisher - Suitable for ordinary fires arising from wood, cloth, paper

Dry Powder Extinguisher - Suitable for flammable liquid and gas fires; recommended for open areas

Carbon Dioxide Extinguisher - Suitable for flammable liquid and electrical fires

Note: They are just recommendations. If you are unsure, please don't attempt to put out fire. You might worsen the situation.

Placing the Fire Extinguisher

1. Extinguishers should be placed in an easily visible and accessible location, preferably near room exits, corridors, stairways, lobbies and landings.
2. Extinguishers should not be located in places where they may be exposed to special risks such as corrosive atmospheres or splashing by corrosive fluids
3. Extinguishers shall be mounted on walls by the hangers or brackets supplied.
4. If the special risk is in a confined space, it is generally advisable to position it outside that space.
5. Cabinets if any housing fire extinguishers, should not be locked. If it needs to be locked to prevent malicious use or physical damage, a glass-fronted box should be used and the key to be located next to or part of the cabinet
6. All free-standing extinguishers may be placed on shelves or on the floor, if permitted by relevant authorities
7. Extinguishers shall be installed so that the carrying handle of the extinguisher is not more than 1.5 metres above the floor.

Escaping through smoke

If you have to escape through smoke, keep low by crawling on your hands and knees. In a fire, smoke will naturally rise leaving some fresh air about 30cm to 60cm off the floor. Crawling keeps your head in this safety zone, away from the smokes toxic content. It also ensures that you will sufficient oxygen to breathe in. If you have a handkerchief or something to cover your nose or mouth, take it out and cover your mouth or nose.

After you get out, go for a checkup to make sure that you did not breathe in too much smoke while escaping.

If you are trapped

Do the following:

1. Enter a safe room, preferably one that overlooks a road.

2. Shut the door behind you. Cover the bottom gap of the door with a blanket or rug, to prevent smoke from seeping through.

3. Shout for help from the window or other openings to alert passers-by. Then wait for rescue to arrive.

4. If you have a handphone, call 995 and inform the operator of your location (room number/position), floor level, what is on fire and how many persons are trapped.

5. Do not attempt to jump out of the building. Help will be on the way very soon.
