But the real winner of this graph seems to me to be Singapore, whose long lives and small health expenditures are the envy of the world.

Our PAP regime would rather go and lose billions and billions in investment or pamper foreigners, help foreigners integrate into Singapore rather than help the local citizens.

This type of government hard to find.

But there's a problem with turning Singapore into a sexy pin-up for health care wonks: it breaks a lot of rules. Conservatives should hate it because the government regulates supply and sets prices and forces all its citizens to put money into a health care savings account. More liberal reformers should be irked by its famously high co-pays to help the government recoup money, because too-high co-pays are supposed to discourage the less fortunate to seek preventative care when the illness can be more cheaply treated. As Watson Wyatt sums up, it's a bizarre combination of a public option and private special care where "the private healthcare system competes with the public healthcare, which helps contain prices in both directions."

When you take stock of the compulsory savings accounts, the mandatory payroll reductions and the copays, you've got something quite weird: A largely government-run program that is ultimately funded mostly by private spending. Indeed, as a percent of total expenditures, private spending on health is higher than the United States and three times greater than the UK and Japan.

Singapore is an extraordinary hodgepodge of health care principles, but it's also a city-state whose health care system is comprised of fewer than 30 hospitals. Still, perhaps it deserves a place in the summer-long blockbuster discussion that begins with "What are we paying for, exactly?"

From the report, it clearly expose the lamentable fact that the Singapore Government is making a profit by charging Singaporeans for the use of the Health Care Services - whose infrastructure was built from the Citizens' money in the CPF.

The citizens are forced to save the money in the CPF, the government use the CPF to build the infrastructure of a Health Care System, and the Government will charge full market rates before giving a "discount" as a subsidy.

Where is the Government subsidy when the infrastructure was built with the Citizen's money ?

Where is the subsidy when the charges are based on "full market rates" based on the charges of similar services performed by private hospitals operated on commercial basis ?

They should have taken a sampling of all the obituraries published in the local papers - over the last 5 years - and they will probably have to make corrections.

Just to share with u another side of the coin.

Pl dunt just quote this report or that report .

Any single one cant reflect the whole true picture.

Tell us the reality here.How is your experiences in SG?

Do u need to pay in other countries,even u are their citizens?

The fact that SG was ranked by WHO as the no.6 in the world health sys

in 2000 is not good enough.read EDB site.

The fact that 500,000 foreign patients seeking treatment in SG

last year is also not good enough.

The fact that SG Infant mortality rate: is the LOWEST in THE WORLD

is also not enough!!

But sorry,legally speaking,all gavaman hospitals have been privatised

to allow feasibility to be ran!!

I have said many times economics ranking cant put foods on the table.

Like wise,health ranking also canNOT cure your illness without proper resources.

ask yourself why 500,000 foreign patients,including of course many Amercian

and Europeans ,come to SG for treatment.U may get more info from Parkway

and Raffles medical groups whose foreign patients form at least

half of their business!!

Americans coming to Singapore for treatment does not mean that Singapore is better than US, it just means that Singapore is cheaper than US, just like Singaporeans going over to Malaysia, China and India for treatment.

If you still can't figure out the WHO report, it's a report based on financials and not on health standards.

The less the government spends on it's citizens, the more highly rated would be the health ranking, Singapore government contributes the least to patients, they rather that patients pay everything themselves.
