"Should they take all that money to provide benefits for the elderly or invest in Shin Corp and ask the elderly to work until they step 6 feet underground?"

Retirement age will have to move in tandem with human life span unless you have enough savings to last you through.

I am not sure if the GST is related to Shin Corp, because what shin corp is experiencing is still a paper lost. I remember not so long ago when Singtel bought over Optus in Australia, many Singaporeans are singing the same song about LEE family using tax payer's money for overseas acquisition etc. And now that Optus is generating decent profits to Singtel, I dont see anybody complaining about why singtel share has gone up by so much.

I dont think we should speculate that GST is relative to Shin Corp, lets wait till the budget annoucement later today and see what the government has to offer for the people. I am sure they will be focusing on the aging population more than the young and able.

I believe the inability for the USA companies to compete is because they are inefficent in their way of life, from manufacturing process right down to the fuel efficency of the engine. And the reason is because amercians are living in a dream, where everything has got to be big, House, Car, Salary, Vacation etc.
What we are seeing right now is a system that is not sustainable and thats why the country is running deficit year after year.

You do know that the reason why cars are so expensive in Singapore is because of taxes? Technically speaking, the price of cars here ought to be the similar to the US but because the Govt chose to regulate consumption and force people to buy new COE after 10 years, the prices naturally get inflated.

Otherwise, the car companies make similar profits per car. Do go and understand some economics.

Do you know that the tax revenue from cars are also being used to repair and enlarge the road system in Singapore. Havent you noticed that Singapore doesnt have 24/7 highway or bridge toll like what you see in so many countries?
Although cars are expensive, but cost of owning a car has definitely come down drastically over the years and we are moving in the right direction.

Yes, the cars in Singapore are not cheap, but why stop at comparing cars only? Why not include the cost and quality public transport in USA? or use cost of BigMac as a comparison.

Since when did Government force their people to buy COE or dictate the price of the COE. Do go do some reading on basic supply and demand.

I would rather the cost of owning a car stay up than have ERPs after ERPs which is doing nothing to help the traffic situation. If anything is to go by, the cost of using the public transport is going up, whereby the cost of owning a car is actually going down.

If the MIW's predictions of a population of 6.5million in the next 20years are to be believed, they have better work hard at reducing the cost of public transportation and improving the services to encourage the switch over.

Then what do you call the ERP then? It is still on average cheaper to drive in the US, and mind you, I'm right there now, and toll isn't something you see every 5 or so miles but rather like 10-20? Heck, I could own a car for 4000USD and I could drive heck around with abundant mobility, and carparks at the surb malls are free. Anyone who earns 28000USD a year can afford a used car of that price, why the hell even bother with public transport? Can a person earning 28000SGD even own a used car? Do you want me to throw more stuff into the mix? What other excuses do you want to give?

a) IF you make $2.3K per month in Singapore you can afford to buy brand new off peak car, or a used car.
b) You dont need to go to USA to look for cheap used car, there are plenty across the causeway.
c) Since you are there, why dont you tell us what is the cost of taking public transport in USA?

As you know there is no one policy that can satisfy the entire population and I can assure you that many here will say that your suggestion is nonsense and they would rather have cheaper car so that you dont waste more money paying interest to the bank and keep the ERPs.

Singapore public transportation is among the best, cheapest and most efficent in the world, and that is not something that can be achieved without planning.

I think there's no need to pursue exhaustive arguments here...

I agree that our gov has done a lot for us, improved on public transportations, road upkeeping, landscaping, etc...

But the fact that incresing numbers of local families migrating elsewhere, simply signifies that whatever good our gov does, is OVER PRICED.

Yes, that's right. They put a price on everything; from problems to solutions to healthcare to whatever...and then themselves every now and then...

People are opting out of their Mad Race...

Yep I must agree that Singapore's public transportation is indeed amongst the best and cheapest. Sometimes we do take things for granted don't we? Very Happy

But meanwhile I feel that ERPs is definately not a solution, it's more of a temporary measure... the rate it is popping up is like mushrooms after a rainy spell!
