I hope the Police can certainly learn from the Mr Brown episode.There are times where common sense should prevail, and there are times where real security is needed.

Let's hope they figure out the proportion.Becuase in the eyes of the public, there is not much of a realisitic weightage given to the right emphasis.

Citizens' security is not a standalone thing.We can ensure security without the use of this law, which by all interpretations, is not a law designed for greater surveillance or more stringent intel work into potential terrorists. Irate citizens are not terrorists, this distinction has to be made pretty clear. This law, allows the policeman on the ground to arrest and detain without having to do much in the way of an investigation because it is not required by the particular legal Act.

This particular law only leaves it open to abuse by irresponsible people in theory, because it is an arbitrary law.

As I've said, the other laws which are on our Statutes, already take care of real threats to national security.We still have the ISA, which already covers a wide range of threats to internal peace and stability of the nation as a whole. Why the duplication of services?

While the possibility of this happening is not little, it shows that treatment differs from people to people. It showed double standards. Needless to say, there are also other considerations which resulted in this. As said, a lot of international events are happening, and we can't afford to leave a bad impression. Each good impression we create helps to increase our future chances of holding more international events.

While there is indeed no proof that those are Mr Brown's supporters, there's also no proof that those study mamas are also terrorists. Since there isn't enough evidence, why the treatment differs? That's the whole issue.

It's not sad, in fact, it revealed some truth.

Most Singaporeans who married foreigners migrated overseas and become a PR there. It makes no sense to leave some space for them in case they want to be a Singaporean again. This applies to their children as well. Having lived in a foreign country for most part of their lives, coming back to Singapore will be a cultural shock for them. Our educational system, lives, weather, etc differs a lot.

At the same time as these people leave for foreign land, there are empty slots for foreigners. Foreigners could apply for it, not just the children of study mamas. Study mamas case is different, Singapore has made allowance for them. I don't think other people from other nationalities even have this right.

However, I was not referring to Singaporeans who married foreigners and had migrated overseas and become a PR. Its those Singaporeans who had married foreign nationals (Especially those from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka etc) and former work permit holders who had worked and returned to their home lands after the end of their contracts that are having problems bringing in their wives and children. A clause in the work permit forbids them from marrying Singaporeans unless permission is obtained from the authorities. Many do not know or thought that it applies to only those who are working here but in actual fact is a life long restriction. These Singaporeans who are here have no way to get their wives and children to be with them here let alone have schooling for their kids and yet children of prostitutes are given preferences!

Kids of singaporeans are not given first priority, is there any other country with such policies?

I'm not sure if such thing is life long, but pretty sure that it is indeed hard to get their wives and kids here. That clause about foreigners holding work permit can't marry Singaporeans, is true. However, it applies only to those holding work permits. Once they expire, they have to go back to their home country, renew it or with permission, apply and be a PR here. My guess is that they never applied to be a PR, so that's why their kids aren't given priority. What worsen this situation is that if their kids are not even born in Singapore.

It doesn't matter if their wives aren't locals, it only matters if their kids aren't locals. That's why differences arise.

Off course they tried to apply for PR but do you think the govt is going to grant PR let alone consider? The authorities are fond of referring to the clause in the work permit no matter how many years had passed since the expiry of their contract. Even to get the child registered in the Singapore embassy is a problem there are too many obstacles for these unfortunate beings.

summary of my message, I think there is a group of S'porean behind the
immoral scandal in order to make the scheme worked both in China and
S'pore.
Corrupted Civil Servants would be implicated since this matter has been
surfaced even in HDB estate in S'pore for so many years I was bullied
and cheated by Chinese nationals in Hainan finally i have to pack up
and go,no redress and protest or else i would be killed there. These
study mamas didnot contribute to the well being and benefit of our
S'pore why they are so daring to protest even though they know it is
illegal activities which they were involved in i.e sex
We must know the source of the problem and not just only the problem
itself.
I was graduated from NUS and holding a master degree in BA from
University of London, but now I am out of job for more than 4 months.
I understand from my friends in S'pore that they are at least 5000
umemployed graduates here and some of them are working on a contract
basis ie 3 to 12 months,Our plight has been highlighted to Gov but they
cant do anything now.

The ugly truth is that you singaporeans are no better. Singaporeans should also take part of the blame. Quite a number of these PDMMs went into prostitution becos they were cheated by unscrupulous agents here. There are lots and lots of foreigners brutally exploited here in Singapore. Dear Bluerray…........ Yes there might be agents taking advanatage of the situation and trick the PDMMS to come here to do things like masseur. But the question now is that the PDMMS are coming here to ply an illegal trade that is conducting prostitution under the pseudo of massaging works. The situation is quite serious, if u ever have a chance to go to those neighbourhood area, u will see that many scantily clad ladies are seen in these “massage” shops. If the problem is not serious, SG govt will not go to the extent of forcing those shops to shut down. Yes u may sympathize with ur countrymen, thats for sure, but think along this way, would u allow other country citizens to conduct illegal trade in ur country? Would u be all too happy to see prostitutes loitering at your backyards? When we see news of ‘snakeheads’ smuggling Chinese citizens to the states, Europe, etc…........., can u blame the coast guards of those nations from arresting them? Yes, those illegal immigrants may be suffering back in their home towns and they wish to get a better life in other nations, but must the host nations give them leeway?

Flies will always be attracted to shit. Why is it that these prostitues able to thrive here in Singapore? Becos there is a huge demand. Even if our govt bans PDMMs, there will still be countless Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai girls etc waiting to replace them. The REAL solution is to educate singaporean men. If they learn to behave properly in the first place, these foreign prostitues will never be growing in numbers.

Finally all I want to say is that singapore exploitation of foreigners is very serious. Look at the third link I provided in my previous post. It clearly proves that the number of cases of maid exploitation here is so widespread but strangely local media did not even publish it. This is also a big problem here but how come it is not receiving same amount of attention from the local media.

Bluerray, if u do follow the newspapers, some time back, the polices have step up raids at night spots to arrest various forms of vices, from prosititution, drug peddling, illegal gambling, etc…....... In these raids citizens of various nationalities are caught, Singapore did not deliberately pinpoint and clamp down on a particular race or nationality. It takes two hands to clap. Yes, there are men patronising prostitutes here for sure, BUT this problem do exist in other country too. But there are also tonnes of “blacksheeps” wanting to take advantage of the VISA and PR system available here rite? Yes, Singapore is a predominantly Chinese race population, furthermore our society is more affluent, definitely we an attractive spot for the Chinese in China too. Thus we do see the statistics of PRC citizens caught doing vice compared to other nationalities, being quite high is natural. Last week there is this talkshow on Channel U abt the PDMMS issue. One of the interviewee claims that one of her PRC counterpart told her that her agent back in China told her that Singapore is a “big goldmine” and “work is veri abundant”. We can imagine wad kind of claims those China agents are telling them. We do see Singapore enforcing strict laws on illegal immigrants like caning them for example, but after these guys are deported, many of their country mates still make the same mistake. Now u should noe the reason…......................
