I have been reading all this coming and going.... and let me share with you what my fellow singaporeans which i talked to as a "straw poll" thinks... below are quotes from what they said:

"I don't like PAP, but opposition lousy. so i vote PAP lor"

"Vote PAP lor, then what?"

"PAP no good, opposition not good, so I still think PAP should be govenment"

"I am not voting opposition, I don't want someone like Chee Soon Juan to be a Minister".

from a resident in the old "bukit gombak" (SDP ling how dong win Seet Ai Mei last time)
"If given another chance, I will not vote opposition, why? becos last time with Mr LHD as MP, we tell Mr Ling we want bus stop, but he didn't do anything, and then this pap guy come along and promise to do this and that... so we vote him lor!"

from another person on my comment that opposition should win a GRC:
"How can! Then a lot of MPs will be out you know. and at least one minister will be out! How Can!"

From a person which we were discussing about upgrade and I told her to vote based on national issues(example need for opposition) rather then "local" issues.
"Elections is about upgrade mah, then what? what do we know about national issues??".

So you see, there is a very very slim chance that PAP will lose a GRC or even more seats, because the MAJORITY of singaporeans have no inkling what they are voting for or what the issues were....

There is no way we can reach out to these people, and the ppl i talked to are ALL pretty well educated and are all professionals..... but they have no idea what is happening....

I tried to talk to them, but the "gap" is just too wide....

Also, MOST singaporeans feel that it is RIGHT for the PAP to dangle the PAP as a upgrading carrot.

well, low thia kiang and slyvia lim should start learning malay…that 5% would have been bridged if there were more malays voting for them….pap claims 80% of malays voted for them in some areas…

Perhaps they are pretty comfortable in the society that the government has created and have no reason to desire change. If the majority of Singaporeans do not desire a change in government, one must respect their wishes in a democracy.

Agreed. As much as many here in this forum share a consensus of a need of an alternative voice, but little can be done to bring about this change if it is the will the majority that the status quo should be kept. I am apalled and disappointed by the mentality that many Singaporeans have taken in excercing their votes. However, I believe instead of criticizing their choices, we should accept this, move on and pherhaps on our own part, bring about a sense of the political happenings and realities in this country to these individuals, to allow them to make better and well-informed choices.

you can hear the PM and at least one PAP MP thanking their voters in Malay. I think that is quite powerful.

I agree that opposition candidates should learn to speak malay...

You know, a thought just occured to me; since they can even get people abroad to vote, I wouldn't be surprised at all, if they suddenly say that PR holders in Singapore should also vote in the next GE.

Afterall, they make the rules... unique they call it.. constantly modifiable.

More than 80% of overseas Singaporeans who bothered to vote did so for the PAP. These are probably the more educated and cosmopolitan of our citizens and they obviously have no wish for a change of leadership.

Just because others do not agree with you does not make them ignorant.

If the oppposition want to win the next election they have to work the grassroots. For those who have received help from these organisation using the taxpapers money, they vote PAP out of gratitude for helping them despite being unhappy about many issues.

the sample of 80% of Singaporeans is not a representive sample. It is estimated 100,000 - 200,000 Singaporeans overseas but only a few thousand voted.

In addition to having your name in the Registers of Electors, : (a) you must have resided in Singapore for an aggregate of two years during the period of five years of being away as of the cut-off date of the Registers of Electors; OR

(ii) on full-time training which is sponsored by the Singapore Government or any Singapore public authority;
(iii) employed outside Singapore by an international organisation of which Singapore is a member, or any other organisation designated by the President under the Constitution of the Republic of Singapore; or
(iv) the spouse, or a parent, child or dependent of a person referred to in sub-paragraphs (i) to (iii) above.

The above are provided under section 13A(1)(a) and (b) of the PEA.

Well. reading comments here and there. First of all, to all my dear Singaporeans, you people keep on talking about who to vote and why we vote, and what we vote for even the elections is over. You people always demand things here and there. Demand good oppositions, demand good government, demand low tax, demand upgrading, demand government to low the price of this and that. BUT in the other way, have you all give it a thought? Did you people contribute back to the society? Not just the money you make when there is charity show or flag day. Just ask yourself, what have you all done that have really help Singapore and the mankind.

that the "bo chap" attitude is auto in them?
well...just be open about all views, share our views with such friends,
make them interested in politics, talk to them lo...
that was what I did during the GE,
and now my bunch of friends more bothered about political and national issues...

Well, education and a cosmopolitan mindset do not necessarily correspond to intellectual maturity in political thought and concerns with policy fall-out.And the eligible voters were either GLC employees or scholars, and that's a microcosm of the typical voting pattern back in-country.

But hey, it's their beef.Might be poison to others though. Wink

I am currently working overseas, but I was back in sgp during the 2 weeks leading up to polling....

I am surprised at the statistic... how did u get the 80%???

btw, do u know what is the criteria for overseas voting? go to the election dept website. u will see that it is very very skewed towards the pap.
