No offence to aleo, but i can't really tahan people asking "what's wrong with 2nd hand smoke?"

if ur science and general knowledge really so bad until u don't know the effects of 2nd hand smoke, go and see more documentaries related to smoking.

of course we know that a little won't die. i believe we r talking about anything more than a little is harmful to health

i agree that how long one lives is really uncontrollable. i agree that some smokers live to a ripe old age, n some non-snokers die of lung cancer.

BUT it is still a fact that with every sniff, ur lungs become blackened, more so over time. u dun believe, u go n cut urself open to see ur lungs then u know.

it's just that different people have varying degrees of health. some can take it, some can't.

u want to smoke, go ahead. ur choice, ur life. who cares? u dun care, i dun care.

BUT for people who don't want to smoke and don't want to breathe 2nd hand smoke, can u deny us our choice? then it's not fair to non-smokers.

i do not want to breathe in 2nd hand smoke, and avoid smokers n places with lots of cigarette smoke. smoking now banned in public places where 1 smoker can affect the lives of many others. that should be ok.

do non-smokers threaten the health of smokers? NO. Then why should we allow smokers to threaten the health of non-smokers?

u want to smoke, do it in ur own toilet at home n u can breathe all u like.

I think there's a confusion between human rights and individual preferences again (like what someone said earlier).

Yes, people don't like certain things and want govt to ban this, ban that. But sometimes u have to probe the reasons why people don't like certain things.

Example: if casino/gambling allowed to thrive, there will be an increasing trend of social ills i.e. bankruptcy, families breaking up, loansharks, suicide, giving pple the wrong idea that gambling is a quick way to gain big bucks w/o working for it etc

Casino/gambling threatens to tear up society. This is an example of how individual preference (i.e. dislike gambling) is actually part of the right of a person to decide what kind of society he wants to live in.

So there's nothing wrong in voicing out individual preferences when they affect our lives and what we decide to make of our own country and society.

That's a fair argument. Yes, Singaporeans have the right to choose the society that they live in. However, they also need to realize that some of (and at least part of) their opinions are not shared by others. what puts me off is that the reasons for their opposition are often trivial and fail to get to the point. Letters to the forum page (and on sgforums), mention things like getting irritating cigarette smoke on their shirt, or having to sit next to someone who has just smoked as primary factors. Perhaps they leave the real details (all the 2nd hand smoking stuff) to the experts, but to write such inconsequential letters to the forum reflects something about their mindset.

Another thing is the tone they employ. There's this "why cant the govt do this", "why can't the govt do that", "the govt must be like this", "you know i'm suffering?" and words to that effect. or they use scaremongering e.g. "if you dont do this, then we all will perish and die and go to hell and society will degenerate into a bunch of mindless louts"

Therefore, it is true that people should have the right to shape and influence the community that they live in, but to do it in this manner is probably unconvincing at best.

DDT is very effective for eliminating mosquitoes because its effect persists a long time. Why don't we spray DDT outside your house to control dengue and tell you to learn to live with the poison?

I agree with u so far.

Not all opinions are shared; trivial reasons show how childish or shortsighted someone is.

But in terms of public and social health, opinions to the advantage of the majority and the society should take precedence over the "selfish" opinions of a few people.

I would like to salute the Singapore Government for extending the smoking ban to open air stadiums, public swimming complexes, community clubs and bus stops. But why is it that I still see ashtrays in the dustbins at all the bus stops?

i dont see why so many people hate smokers.i mean, you've been living your life with 2nd hand smoke right? every single humans die sooner or later.

and also, to have a perma ban of smoking in singapore? that isn't possible.you say you want to breathe in fresh air. but was there fresh air in singapore in the first place? why was there a small hole in the ozone layer above the artic? (or was it the antartic?) that's mainly due to pollution. why do we get haze? its from the smoke from indonesia. so you want to ask the Govt to ask Indonesia to stop cutting and burning down of trees?

don't ask the govt for ridiculous stuff.you know it won't happen, and it never will. you can just wish for it to happen. the smoking ban on public places in singapore is already bad. why make it more worse?so you can have a healthy life? then you're being selfish, am i not right?

that's just my opinion on those who say "oh i hate smokers, cause they make my shirt smelly, etc etc etc"

but i however, despite saying the above, support the govt on banning smoking in air-conditioned areas, foodcourts and coffeeshops.

it is the result of propaganda that people think smoking causes cancer. most people want ciggies to be banned because the smoke is irritating more than because it cause cancer.

Smokers pay more taxes than non-smokers. At least gahmen should provide convenient places for them to smoke. Non-smokers can stay clear of these places.

I think non-smokers are not getting lung cancer from cigarette smoke but from pollution, particularly motor pollution. Smoking has been on the decline and many places have smoking ban. Therefore lung cancer should decline as well. If it is increasing, it must mean that something else in the air is causing the cancer.
