I don't know why the authority approved the proposal of increasing the fare when the company is making profit!

Reason: Singapore is one of the country with the lowest PUBLIC transport cost.
The company is making reasonable profit.

Just came back from Shenzhen China last sat. While in SZ, I watched their news. Envy their people there cos the news reported that all grades of petrol price reduced across the board due to a fall in the price of Crude Oil recently. I yet to see same thing in Singapore except petrol kiosk spending $ to make those large numericals to display as number in a discount % manner....

The government say increase the bus fare n MRT fare 1 or 2 cent only,but they have to calculate u know,a person take transportation is to n fro the destination.And moreover,if a person is jobless n he or she need to find a new job,they also have to take public transport.If let say they top up $20,from my experience,within 4-5 days their $20 will be gone liao.How are they going to survive,their families burden will be even greater!!!

SMRT asked for adjustment to cash bus fare to up by 10cents though SBS did not make any application on this, yet it was approved

Then, SMRT did said bef they will not change students fares, why is it that it appeared that they applied for a 5 cent increase and $1 - $6 adjustment for stamp passes?

3 cent might not be a lot but think about this, if u take 2 bus trips to work and 2 trips back home, it costs u 12 cent more. plus if u go out for lunch, another 6 cent for 2 trips. so one day u spent 18 cent more.

so considering one month has 4 weeks and u are working 5 days a week, it'll cost u $3.6 more per month. and if u go out for the weekends it'll definately cost u $4+ more. Neutral Confused Rolling Eyes

let say a family have 3 children, all are schooling, if all three of them take 2 bus trips to school and back home, total cost $0.36 more. one month is $7.20 more. so plus the bus trips of both their parent (see my post above), one family is going to pay $15++ more. Neutral Confused Rolling Eyes

Just curious, they say transport fees will go down if there is excessive profit and economy no good. Do the operators need to apply and seek approval for the PTC to reduce the price?????

Lowest? please lah, our public transport is one of the highest around the world. Remember it's at least $0.83 for every bus trip. If you take more than 10 bus trips in one day it can cost you $7.50!

You multiply $7.50 with 30 days and you see how much you can spend each month on just bus trips! I've not even include MRT trips- which can be about $1 to $2 plus each single trip!

Well, I only have LA and San Francisco on my list because I took their buses and trains last year when I was there. I dunno much about KL and other Asian cities though.

Bangkok's system is similar to ours though- but because the baht is relatively cheap, it wasn't as bad as compared to ours.

But you still ahve to measure the bus fare in Bangkok with relation to the purchasing power of the locals to get a clearer picture.
