i agree with laurence if we still in the form of industrialization where the more people u have, the more productivity you are.

however, are we still in this phase?

with today's technology and advancement, a group of ten doesnt necessarily be more productivity than a group of two. there is always options to outsource labour work.

to produce or educate in mass is not always the best alternative.

i always believe better qualify can be achieved with one teacher to 10 students, than one teacher to 50 students.

I wonder which economist would tell you increasing population size would increase the economic growth... maybe our "leader" should be sent out to tell all those small population countries about their "poor" economic growth...

There are more factors in macro economics than just population. One of which is the govt policies. Even with 10 million, we won't grow much if the policies our "leader" set are counter productive.

the population renewal is dual prong. One of whch if no one ever noticed is the govt is dead set against support us when we age, So we were forced to have CPF. Then they realised CPF is insufficient. So they want to have a more younger people to support the increasing number of older people (or hope they all become quitters). Yes, having more younger people is good for the economy and they had calculated the returns from having young people and they have held this single idealogy dearly. However, their policies and system right now cannot handle the multitudes of issues that arise in this new age and thinking in the higher number of younger people. And the young also do not want to be saddled with having to take care of the old.

yeah lah, we are past industralization. We are into information age. Fact is that we do not need to ship ppl into singapore to use their talent and access their assets/
In fact, I am fighting for my job with some engineer located in India. He will never step into Singapore to get a offer for my job.

That, btw is who you are truly competiting with .. no longer with only your peers but better, more qualified ppl from anywhere on earth...

i forgot to think from the govt's perspective: more citizens = more taxes collected.

the living comfort is not exactly the primary agenda.

i wonder the surplus of the tax collected goes to where... ?

if they wise enough, you can collect huge amount of taxes, but at lower rate per capita, at high economic growth

Under management's rules, they ARE the MINISTERS and already MONOPOLISED the SYSTEM... Their MAIN CONCERN would be people 'touching' them from other countries... NOT US... We don't really pose a threat to them... AT LEAST NOT FOR NOW...

I don't know but I cannot stand it to see my parents still working at 70s.
I know that it might very well be my future to wash some toilet or sweep the roads when I am too old to be "employed" and yet too young to retire based on the national standards

Its a scary future to look towards ...

actually its quite sad

few years ago, the senior citizens enjoy their retirement, chatting with neighbours at void decks, and doing stuff they like

now, its like i see them still working as cleaners and doing other manual jobs

big hoo ha on tv about how much the government or community do help them, but its not enough

and, the younger ones and fresh grads are struggling to find jobs....

Globolisation as in the use of foreigns has become an undeniable fact. There won't be easy stopping it for now.

Personally, I think the 'cramming' problem is sort of like a conflict between the various 'objectives' in our government's management system. It's not just economical but also political issues to be concerned with...

As for the slow growth rate, it's just a social problem largely created by our own government's policies.. Trying to 'reverse' the effect now, especially by 'tricking' the people ain't working miracles like they used to anymore...

It's only natural to think that when a population is not adapting well to the changes made and to the environment they're exposed to, they'll just cease their own existence....
