So I was quite pleasantly shocked when I heard the news - Well I don't mind having gay friends but it didn't occur to me that I would have one this soon.

Having him as a friend means accepting whatever he is. Although, you may not support a gay's lifestyle, you need to understand that changes cannot be brought about by you alone - the other party has to accept the fact and change within him.

I am not dampening your spirit here but I'd rather that you be a friend - just like how you would treat others in a well and carefree attitude.

I believe that he had also faced a lot of societal pressure.If you think you still want to maintain a good relaionship with him as a friend, try to accept him as who he is. I reckon from your post u arent gay yourself. Hopefully u will not presume that gay friends definitely have a thing for all their male friends. Its not true and as i used to have a gay friend, they can be in fact one of the best and fun tobe with friends you could ever have.

In short, as long as it is clear to the both of you that romance will never blossom and just like platonic friendships btw a guy and a gal, imho you should maintain the friendship. Hope you wont judge and ostracise a gay just because for the sake he is gay.
