SM Goh ever compared us with the French football team with the
likes of Zinedine Zidane, Christian Karembeu and Claude
Makelele.
Take ZZ for example, he may have Algerian roots but if one were
to ask him where his loyalty lay, he would say that he's a French
thru and thru. That's where he was brought up and skills, honed,
isn't it?
Even Dutch players like Frank Rijkaad, Winston Bogarde, Ruud
Gullit etc would tell you that they are Oranje thru and
thru, despite their Surinam roots.
Now, compare that with Li Jiawei and Tao Li, they are here only
for the money. Li Jiawei wouldn't even make it in the Chinese team
of paddlers, S'pore is her only chance for her faint attempt at
Olympic participation. And then Tao Li, do you think her parents
are here for the money? What's her father doing in Wuhan if they
really want to assimilate into our local culture. Are these the
kind of pple who would belt out Singlish like a walk in the park?
Eat our local spicy Laksa and Mee Rebus? You think
these mercenaries would live and die here?
I would love to see a born and bred S'porean sweat his guts out
at these Games. Even if a loss beckoned, I would be proud of it.
Sportsmanship is not about glory all the time...it is also about
patriotism and well, sportsmanship.
Yah. Agree.
I wonder when will Singapore start buying Michael Phelps over,
at least he is capable of 8 Olympic Gold.
These days in Singapore, sports is no longer about National
identity. Who knows, maybe in the future we will buy African
marathon runners to help us win Olympic Gold, then folks watching
tv in the other countries will think that the majority of
Singaporeans are black African.
