joint accounts are usually opened cos both parties wanna contribute to the account for sth.... it can be for a future or dating funds as wat someone else stated somewhere... both parties need not contribute the same amount... tho that would be ideal.. Wink

wheneva ur gf complains about not havin enuff money to spend, ask her if she has any idea where she's spending her money.

I usually have no idea where exactly my money's gone too Embarassed but i noe that they're mostly spent on food Mr. Green as for wat type of food, i'm lost

wat i usually do, would be to record down ALL my expenditures. in exact details.

like 1.95 on mac's tempura chicken lar...
0.70 on barley drink lar etc

every little thing i buy, i record them down.

then at the end of the mth, before my next pay, i'd take out my records, and do some self-reflection.

Did i overspend on stuff that i have absolutely no use for?

How can i justify my spending? Are they necessary? Is there a cheaper alternative? etc

and then, plan a budget of some sorts....

remind her how exp everything is in sg when it comes to settling down... Razz

liek the reno of ur flat? the cost of havin a banquet, photograph shoots etc...

and if each of u are gg to save up 200 a mth, which amounts to 400 per mth, it would take around 50 mths for u to save up to 20k.. which is barely enuff... for the wedding package, or renovation for ur new place...

unless u wanna take up a loan. and then, ur take home pay every mth after cpf, will have to go towards repaying all ur loans... such as home reno loan, ur furnitures, if u opted for instalment, ur electrical appliances too..

then there's savings to be placed aside for ur kids if u wanna have one...

and also.. if ur cpf is insufficient, u need to top up the repayment with cash.. Wink

IMHO,

with regards to financial issues... both parties shd share equal responsibilities .. since more women are working and earning now jus like their bf/ spouses are, guys should be paying about 50-70% while gals contributing 30-50% of all expenses. tat seems pretty fair for me.

however shd the gal meet a guy ( more male chauvinism ) then the lucky gal might not haf to fork out a single cent at all Wink

Financial responsibility is one of the most important yet thorniest issue in relationships. It is very hard to change a spendthrift's attitude towards money unless he/she goes thru a hard patch.

It would be easier to find one who is actually responsible toward money right from the start.

I'm not kidding. I know ppl who continue to be reckless with their money many years later in their late 20s/early 30s.

Personally... I never find it a wise thing to do a joint account / savings/ whatever you call it.... Unless you're talking about buying a house / flat or something? Even then, that should properly planned and accounted for...

It's better that both of you have more concrete plans as to what you wanna do for survival and savings... What are the more 'materialistic' goals you wish to fulfill in life and what kinda life-style both of you wish to lead... What's the minimium necessities?

Like alot of forumites have already suggested, it's true that financial management between a couple can be one of the thorniest problems ESPECIALLY when you're talking about MARRIAGE and spending the REST of your lives together....

If you don't have things work out... Often than not.. Expect to be FAR from a BED OF ROSES.... Cool

I think you misread my post.
What I meant to say is that these ppl did not change after several years.
Presuming they were in their late teens when the problem first surfaced... they continue to be the same way even when they hit their late 20s/early 30s.

I think u only have a joint a/c when both are ready to settle down.
U should sit down with her & discuss the future, how much to save.

She has to do her part in contributing & budgeting cos problems will arise during marriage if one party is spendthrift.
If she is not willing, then don't get married or u will be in debt.
