will raise fares by 2.3 percent from June. Passengers will have to
pay 10 to 20 cents more for each journey.
The increase has been calculated under a fare adjustment
mechanism linked to rises in the consumer price index and wage
indices.
The MTRC's General Manager for Marketing, Jeny Yeung, said the
railway needed a lot of money each year for expenses, capital
renewal and upgrading facilities. She said that in order to
maintain a good service the corporation had to have a steady source
of income.
The fare rise follows an increase of just over two percent last
year.
Miss Yeung said the company would continue with existing
concessions worth $1.6 billion a year to help over one million
eligible passengers.
A spokesman for the Coalition to Monitor Public Transport and
Utilities, Richard Tsoi, opposed the fare increase, saying it would
add to the already high cost of living. He said it could not be
justified financially because the corporation posted a big profit
last year. <!-- content end -->
