Green buses to hit roads Aug
GREEN buses with less or zero emissions will be hitting the
roads in August as part of a year-long trial.
One bus will ferry Youth Olympic Games participants around their
accommodation in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
campus.
The hydrogen-electric hybrid bus, developed by the Nanyang
Technological University and China's Tsinghua University, has no
harmful emissions. Instead, water is produced and released through
its exhaust pipe.
Also running on SBS Transit's service 185 route will be two
hybrid buses that run on electricity and diesel.
The use of electricity results in fuel savings of up to 30 per
cent.
Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Teo Ser Luck, who
was the guest of honour at the launch of the buses on Tuesday,
said: 'If this technology is found to be suitable for our local
context, we can expect to see even more such green buses running on
our roads in the near future.'
