i refer to the s76 bus shown above.

as for the highlight shuttle bus,, notice the side EDS positioned
at rear exit. this is because most japanese bus use baording at
rear. somhow when u alight from bus, u then pay at driver
there.
this one their system they develop. is same like the Hong Kong tram
one. u board at rear then when alight pay at driver there at
front.
in their case the system is explain like this. is based on a travel

1) u board at rear grab some sort of ticket from a machine.
obviously the ticket say where u board
2) once boarded immediately look at the panel at front (if have)
and note ur fare. this dispaly baord is vvery big. has place name
as bus stop names and many LED slots side by side to the many place
names in a nice neat array.
the LED slots will update fares accordingly as bus passes by bus
stops so GPS is important in japan buses. this feature i heard was
developed in mid 80s using radio signal technology so its a very
long n well established system
3) when alighting pass driver ur ticket n pay the fare. may request
driver to give back ticket if u know jap. drvier shall check ur
baording point n made sure u paid correct.
the entire display board also doubles up as a current bus stop
indicator. that is once the fare number disappear from the location
ngo blank u know the bus have arrived at that stop
EXAMPLE
for example u board at sensei University. u going thru tamago plaza
to get to this place called gala district 3rd zone.
the board will have blank at sensei university. u zoom ur vision
across the board to tamago plaza . it says 1.60. hmm not the place
i going, u scroll faster see gala district 3. ah 2.70
u get ready 2.70 in coins . as bus move watch board.
upon reaching tamago plaza you had boserved the number had jumped
from 1.60 down to 1.00 then suddenly went blank. u know u had just
reached tamago plaza. u look forward to reaching gala district
3.
once the bus reached gala district 3 the LED numbers at that
position go blank. u proceed for alighting process. pass driver yen
2.70. then alight.
this means such Japanese buses CANNOt do cameo.
so reasons why they implement this system
1) prevent fare cheating
2) is a great idea. abble to double up as current location telling.
good idea they came up in 1980s without those GPS.
rear boarding why?
1) board n alight at front is not good for people flow in bus
2) board at front and alight at back is not good as driver dun
drive bus in middle. driver is the one that collects revenue so is
important in process and so he become zhu jiao (main character) and
system has to be design on him. . due to the system they've come up
with , sad to say board at rear n alight at front is the only best
way to do it.
in japan if flat fare bus then boarding at front like our current
European OMO styles of bus boarding. just give driver he fare then
sit down.
