Nostalgia on Buses

Can anybody tell me more about the older buses, those engines in the font ?, like the OF's, MB 03xx, Leyland Victory, the Vkings ? Because I was born in 1992...

In that case, I'm sure what you saw was an Atlantean as the Olympians were still up and running at that time. The wire mesh for the engine at the rear was a clear giveaway. The bus is gone now.

That is not the whole story. For decades, STC held a monopoly to work within the city limits while the Chinese bus operators work the outlying districts. In April 1971, the 10 Chinese bus companies were amalgamated into 3. Each were given a sector of the island and the city to serve but the STC was left with its traditional central sector. With its monopoly rights repealed, the STC had no important role to play because much of its revenue comes from passengers who board at the city boundary from the outer sub-urban services, which were not allowed to penetrate deep into STC territory.

Its unfair to say that STC have poor standards. The bus engineering staff built up an efficient and standardised bus fleet and much of the priciples established by STC are still carried out today. The demise of STC was mainly due to poor management of the commercial side of the business, which failed to obtain a proper share of routes in the re-orginasation. Hence, the company went into liquidation within months of the re-org.

The 3 amalgamated companies were no better. They were more interested with their own profit and refused to co-operate with one another. The transport situation worsened until the government put a firm hand into the matter and brought everything into a single entity in November 1973.

SBS only held the monopoly on bus services for 10 years. In 1983, the late Ong Teng Cheong allowed the start-up Tibs to take over the northern sector routes. Since then, Tibs had been on an expansion drive. The award of the NEL to SBS screwed their plans for expanding into the northeastern corner.

They didn’t sound like an O.303. The body did look more like an O.302, but the O.302 was quite gutless anyway. However, I do remember them as being manual buses, so maybe they were an O.302 with a downrated engine?

I know it actually be MB O302s but the book is stated as MB O303 (SABS).

Not forgetting about Tibs Hino RK 176!! It was brought to Tibs in 1983 with first 2 svcs took over from SBS Transit: Svc 160 & 167, and later Svc 161, 164, 169, 178, 180, 181, 182, 204, 208 & 372.

The SBS MB OF 1417 were then leased to Tibs as Tibs were short of buses, pending the arrival of additional new vehicles. SBS1632X, SBS5574D, SBS5576Z, SBS5577X and SBS5583G were the examples.

I just remembered this. Svc 189 used to have this extra side desto that used to say that SBS (sic) was recruiting and people who are interested could take the bus to the depot (189 passes by Bukit Batok depot) and ask for more info.

Come to think of it, buses used to have 2 side desto placeholders for some reason. This was about 10 years ago, I think.

there was also bus advertisements with the malay fella in dark green shirt also used as a recruitment tool.. services 159 used to have these advertisements, since it passes by Braddell.

the 2 place holders, i guess was because buses then keep changing route numbers within a day or something, but now they keep the destos inside the bus instead.

once on SBS3578G it was serving 315, then switch to 317 alternatively, so 2 plates 2 holders. the mk2 and Scanias have them, and so does the LO2x LA MB O305. the LA has them one above each other i think. now no more maybe becos ppl from faraway may see 2 plates instead of one, so maybe confusiion arises

The 2 side desto holders, were not meant for the above. SBS have introduced some best services awards more than 10 years ago. awarding some services best services of the month. And these services got to display a side plate (which is gold in colour i think), indicating it is best service of the month. That why there is two side desto plate.... SV155 once got this best service award.
