Although BP1 and NS4 are linked, the fact is, LRT and MRT rides are charged separately.

Yes, same story in Sengkang and Punggol. An example using Adult ezlink:

NE17 Punggol - NE16 Sengkang: 74 cents
STC Sengkang - SE1 Compassvale: 64 cents
NE17 Punggol - SE1 Compassvale: $1.13

A passenger taking a MRT train from Punggol to Sengkang, then transfer to a LRT train to Compassvale, has to pay $1.13. How is this $1.13 calculated? Add 74 cents (Punggol to Sengkang) and 64 cents (Sengkang to Compassvale) and you get $1.38, there is a rebate of 25 cents and so the fare to pay is $1.13.

Luckily the NEL is not considered as LRT or whatever as long as it is not MRT, else we need to pay more in making transfers between NEL and EWL/NSL.

Hopefully CCL is considered as MRT.

Hopefully PTC/SMRT/SBST is not taking a cue from here, and requested for a fare alignment and make transfers between NEL/SMRT as much as BPLRT and NSL.

MRT is heavy rail connecting high density areas of Singapore together. LRT is light rail connecting neighbourhoods of a HDB town together (with the exception of BPLRT, which it connects Bt Panjang to Choa Chu Kang which is another town).

Let hope no more LRT will be built. Rolling Eyes

Based on the BPLRT ridership of abt 32K for a 14 (?) km line, is it viable to have heavy rail served instead?

It's impossible convert LRT to MRT. And a waste of money, And soon the circle line is coming to the Bukit Timah area. But i think the Bukit Timah line will quite some way from Bukit Panjang area. Unless someone can advise me where the nearest Bukit Timah MRT will be? I can tell you building a LRT in the first place is a bad decision. Most singaporean don't like to transfer LRT to MRT. It's a waste time and money. I live in Bukit Panjang area and i don't take LRT to go to work or elsewhere. Bus is a cheaper and faster option. I agree that there is a need to improve the bus service here.

I understand what is a LRT and what is a MRT.

My question was why and how a tranfer between LRT and MRT is different from transfer between MRT (SMRT) and MRT(NEL)?

Why couldn't a transfer between LRT and MRT be treated as a transfer between MRT and MRT?

Or rather why the fare structure for a transfer between MRT(SMRT) and MRT(NEL) not treated as a transfer LRT and MRT?

Shouldn't LTA propose a LRT (rather MRT) for Jurong West extension instead? Having a LRT allows the SMRT to collect more revenues. And benefit SMRT shareholders.

The CCL station at Bukit Timah would be Adam Station. Located near SMU or entrance to botanical gardens.

To answer the question abt between LRT and MRT is different from transfer between MRT (SMRT) and MRT? First MRT (SMRT) and MRT are part of MRT network whether own by SBS transit or SMRT. Where the LRT is a total different network. Which operate part of the town area.

Existing LRT will remain as LRT and will never be converted to MRT.

The underground Bt Timah MRT line is proposed to start from Bt Panjang, run under Upp Bt Timah Rd and Dunearn Rd to reach the city. Most possibly connect with Adam, Newton, Little India and Bugis stations.

Although MRT and LRT are rail systems, they are totally different modes of public transport. A transfer betweeen NEL and EWL/NSL is treated as travelling on one mode of public transport, so passengers pay once, but a transfer between NSL and BPLRT, NEL and SKLRT/PGLRT is treated as travelling on two modes of public transport, so passengers pay twice with rebate.

Why the Boon Lay extension is proposed as an MRT extension instead of a new LRT line, is because after Jurong West St 63, it runs to an industrial area. Having a LRT line running to an industrial area is not a viable option.

For CCK, other than 975, all other services within the town centre area terminate at CCK Int.

As for toa payoh, its pretty much accessible to almost everywhere in s'pore except the north. (i.e Yishun and Sembawang) Other than that, toa payoh has a direct bus to many places in singapore Wink

Actually, what you said is quite true. Maybe, it’s because of the location of BP which is near Upp Bt road and Bt road. But if you want to travel places like Ang Mo Kio , Hougang, sengkang and Toa Payoh. We have to switch bus at Bt road. Altough the journey isn’t too long. But i still feel that there is a need for direct bus to these area.

Bt Panjang to Ang Mo Kio and Hougang: services 190/700/960 to Whitley Rd, cross road and transfer to service 132.

Bt Panjang to Toa Payoh: services 190/700/960 to Whitley Rd, cross road and transfer to services 105/153.

Bt Panjang to Sengkang: services 190/700/960 to Whitley Rd, cross road and transfer to service 156. Or services 187/963 to Woodlands and transfer to service 161.

seens that a transfer is necessary. but if one stays in fajar that area, it makes no sense to have such transfer due to cost and time. (as compare with taking LRT To CCK and to Toa payoh, going through a big round via Woodlands and Kranji to reach the Toa Payoh)

for god sake, please have a direct bus services to these area lah, SMRT!
Dunt understand why having so much buses to Woodlands as well, since Bt panjang also have trains to Woodlands! All boil down to one word : accessiblity!
If according to the SMRT argument, asking people to take LRT, then shouldn't they withdraw all the bus services to Woodlands! (178 187 960 963 961)

Ok.I have done some bus fare calculation.

BP to AMK by 960, 190, 700 : Last bus stop before expressway to first bus stop at Whitley Rd 12 stage ($1.13) + bus stop @ Blk 700B(nearest to the old AMK INT) 10.5 stage ($1.13) = $2.26

BP to AMK by 170 , 961 : Before Petir Rd to Dunearn Rd (First bus stop) 6.5 stage ($0.83) + same bus stop to bus stop @ Blk 700B 13.5 stage ($1.23) = $2.06

Save $0.20.

It is cheaper to go to Sengkang using 960, 190, 700 to whitley Rd and change to Svc 156
