According to a past newspaper comment by TIBS, it was because bendy buses would better cater to the needs of the rapidly aging population in Singapore.

Maybe if Volvo has their equivalent of the 0405G, maybe SBST may buyit :p

This is rather true. More elderly move to the rear of a Bendy Bus, compared to the number of elderly moving to the upper deck of a double decker bus.

B10MAs like 998Y lohz, just hope the body they choose isn't just as ugly. Yes, old folks indeed find it a hindrance to climb up and down steps, especially in double-decks where they have to clamber down before their stop when the bus is moving.

A bit side topic here...

The Volvo B10M Superlong (SBS997A) is 14.5m right? And its rear is 'tapered' like its sister, the Volvo B10MA (SBS998Y).

The question is...

I've seen other 14.5m Superlong buses, such as in Australia and the Europe, but such buses doesn't have a tapered rear. Why so for SBS997A and not the foreign buses?

Australia and European Roads are much less congested and more spaced out compared to busy Asian cosmopolitians such as Singapore and Hong Kong. As such, the tapered end helps to clear the traffic lights poles which are forced to be situated very near the kerb side, hence 997A, with a hge turning radius, may need that extra help to allow it to turn easily.

For better manouverability. The Aussie buses with 14.5m long body are Scania L113TRBLs.

However, it is far more costly to maintain a Bendy as compared to a Double Deck, at least there isn't the rather "fragile" articulator to take care of.

Bendy buses take up more parking space, which is severely limited in a bus depot..

SBST brought in 9000S in 1993, while TIBS brought in 838H in 1996, few months earlier than 998Y.

All this comes down to the huge investment which SBS had put in to provide for their double-deck fleet. If they switch to bendys, ie. single deck, then all that money will be wasted.

As for TIBS, they don't have the facilities to house double-deckers and are not planning to build one. So they will stick to bendys.

Yes, SBST has 741 a/c double-decks, and 198 2-axle VOs, with about 30 2-axle LOs. Total of 969 double-decks, the investment they have placed in double-decks is simply too great for them to dump all 900+ of them for 900+ bendys.

Correction, it should be 98 2-axle Volvo Olympians. I think there is a lot less 2-axle Leyland Olympians now. Saw only 2 at Boon Lay Interchange on Deepavali.

Yah, paisay, I meant 98 2-axle VOs. There are about 15-20 2-axle LOs still in Boon Lay, they should all be in the great bus park up in the sky by end 2003.

Sad Do your notice some services are claimed as PAC but are NAC services.
Service 11, 90, 94, 107 have NAC buses as majority with service 90 being totally NAC.

Sv. 90 being non-aircon is only on weekdays. On weekends O405s and CAC N113CRBs run. So the claim it's partially air-conditioned is true.

Service 90 may need to get DD even if it is a AC one. However, service 8 may be converted to a PAC service as demand is very low and I saw empty DD along the rt before.

SBS is intending to be going fully aircon in 2006 after the B10M is withdrawn in 2005 (First reg in 198 Cool and the Scanias in 2006 (First reg in 1989).
I don't know about the VO 2x as their COE ends in 2010 (First reg in 1993)
