ozzy-gurl SG Well a few people have asked me to help them with their english.(pronounciation, and spelling) So if anyone would like to me to help them,or has something that they are not sure about......just say and I'll try to help I'm not sure where people want me to start,so I'll wait until the first person tells me exactly what they want to know.......and I'll help form there So come on people...........start asking!
ozzy-gurl SG well for starters....basic things like this: When you meet someone: "Hello, how are you today?" Reply: "I am good today thankyou." OR: Meeting: "Hi, how are ya?" Reply: "I'm good thanks."
ozzy-gurl SG I will teach both the correct, full way to say things, plus the shorter, slang way (eg....."Hi how are ya?") Because I know that nobody really talks using the complete proper english all the time....everyone uses a lot of slang.
ozzy-gurl SG To start......does everyone know the full english alphabet? a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z.....I'm pretty sure you will all know that. I will start by teaching normal sentences you would use when you first meet someone.
ozzy-gurl SG Person 1: "That is good, how is your family?" Person 2: "My family are well also, thankyou."
ozzy-gurl SG **** I have noticed that when a lot of singaporeans say that have to do something, they say," I got to buy food." (example.) The correct way to say this is: "I have to buy food" OR: "I need to buy food." OR: "I want to buy food." OR: "I am going to buy food." The word "GOT" means you have already bought these things.
ozzy-gurl SG Very well pointed out FireIce, but that must be a cultural difference, because in Australia we are taught that it is actually spelt "pronounciation." "pro-noun-cia-tion".....not "pro-nun-cia-tion." BECAUSE (not bcos) the word is "pro-nou-nce"......not "pro-nun-ce". Cultural differences might make this a bit harder than first thought.
ozzy-gurl SG I would like to hear the ways you are taught english in singapore.....so I know exactly how differently you are taught compared to how we are taught by the english schooling system. I always had straight A+ grades in school for my english, including pronounciation and spelling. So I am hoping to be able to help the people that have asked me to help them...and anyone else that would like me to help them.
ozzy-gurl SG yes....the slang would be: "I've gotta buy food." But when you say it in the proper english, you would not say," I got to buy food." You would say, " I have got to buy food." That is also exceptable.
thoreldan SG you've already mentioned about cultural difference...what's wrong with a bit of singlish here and there? Our English isnt as bad as you think, it's just the way we want it to be
ozzy-gurl SG I have never said there is anything wrong with singlish....or the way you talk......I am doing this becasue I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO BY A FEW PEOPLE.......not because I think your english is bad! I have told these people that I think their english is very good, but they have still asked me to help them. So I will help them......is that alright with you thoreldan?
ozzy-gurl SG hmmm...ok...one spelling mistake, while i was trying to type here, but also feed my nephew at the same time! i admit...i spelt it wrong...its acceptible....not exceptible... and yes Driftingguy.......im helping peole to learn english
