Never forget your ACS roots .. which started in Amoy Street.

William Fitzjones Oldham (1854-1937) arrived in Singapore in 1885 to establish the first Methodist Episcopal Church in Malaya and Singapore. On 1st march 1886 the first school was started with 13 pupils at 70 Amoy Street in a shophouse when Oldham had raised $6,300 from his Chinese friends and $6,000 from the Colonial Secretary McCabe. English was taught in the morning and Chinese in the afternoon in this school, "the Chinese merchants undertaking to pay all current expenses, the missionary not charging for his time and labour".

Alcoholism is a social ill. Since when its a value? I was thinking more of Geert Hofstede.

Again, Singapore Chinese have a problem with gambling, Indians with alcoholism, Malays with drugs

So these can be considered Asian values?

I dunno why you all suck at it when Chinese High people can ace both languages.

I mean for a school which started as one a tinge of chinese tradition, the chinese standard today is mediocre at best.

Furthermore, to suck at it is no excuse. Rich families can always afford the best tutors.

The concepts of hanging on tightly to roots is silly.

Know what is your roots, but never let it become an issue or an obstacle. So what if ACS is not 'cheena'?

I may not like ACS, but I dont know what is the problem about.

a lot of my friends and i have had chinese tuiton since p1.
its just the english background i guess. the only time we speak chinese is during chinese lessons. and even then, we still fused in abit of english here n there

The funny thing is, the sg chinese has problem with gambling, but gambling never feature prominently in the western vices - they are more of booze and sex. I suppose they can control themselves better, even though their Las Vegas is more attractive than Macau, the gambling mecca of the east.

Whereas IJ people are furious that ST calls them "loose", I think ACS people are rather bochup that their chinese CMI.

Edit - I suspect even the teachers think their students CMI in that respect.

In fact they can even be proud at the fact that their chinese CMI.

Simply because you have no proof whatsover whose standard of English or Mandarin is good or lousy, and so what the one page on harping on roots, social ills, values, standards of language?

I can say most Chinese High people sucks in English, and the point is?

What is the point of doing all these? Like I said, what are you trying to point out?

I could say your alma mater Temasek JC has no culture whatsover simply because its just established for few decades, unlike Raffles, ACS or Victoria ,and I dont see the point in doing all that, or how it relates to topic.

a) clarifying the point he is bringing out

b) without proof

c) or even a first hand participant observation, like a member of a school for example

If you say TJC has no rich tradition like the three, I agree with you. TJC annual anniversary is definitely less of a spectacle than ACS Founders Day.

I never made brash statements.

When I say the abortion rate in CJC is high, it is the peeps in bar that gave me the impression.

When I say the western social ill is booze, I use the example of Prohibition and that it failed. (I apologize for using the word values)

When I say the chinese standard in ACS is mediocre at best, I make sure no one will sue me like the IJ and ST affair.

When I say "you are a liar", I make sure there is a legal precedent for this in Singapore.

Yes. For your second question, this is called participant observation, which is more accurate than a non participant one.
