If anything, duty personnel used these duties
to catch up on their rest in my time ~lol~
Particularly on weekends & public holidays, when my unit COSs
& clerks would regularly bring down their mattresses, portable
burners & even TV sets down to the office. Those doing
guard-duty were less comfortable but no worse off: "do two hours,
sleep four hours", loh! By nighttime, we were more than adequately
rested for the duty shifts.
Even the weekday "day" camp guards got reasonable slack time. Sure,
doing sentry was dull as hell, but it's physically effortless.
Off-duty, you're free to nap all you wanted in the guardroom bunk
too.
IMO Things are only siong for the guard commander & 2IC, cuz
there's only two of them to rotate over the 24-hour stretch. (In
contrast, the ordinary guards usually rotated in 3 details.) Their
sleep was further disrupted cuz the GC had to physically walk
around the camp once past midnight (to check on the night
prowlers), & the 2IC must stay up to man the guardroom when
he's away. Things got so bad (2-3 hours' sleep a night) that my
Enciks would later give these duty NCOs the rest of the morning
off, training needs permitting. It's the latter duos who need the
extra rest, not the others ...
