Katas is a set of moves thats aim to develope proficiency in skills and the ability to follow up on the attacks using moves that can put a person life in immediate danger (eg. a hit in the groin) as such moves are not allow in free sparing due to its being too lethal.

When u have done the same thing a thousand time everyday movements indeed become a second nature. Kata give you the ability to execute a quick follow through and fast reflexes. A true kata is not about a cherograph dance, you are suppose to do it with your mind being contantly aware of dangers surrounding you. Martial art dont teach u to be aggresive but to enable the practitional to adapt and react to the chges in situation.

Singapore regular army is small. With high casualty rate i believe the roles undertaken by regular soldiers might include assasination.

What so bad with having an army of assasins!!!!!! Assasins has always been proven useful in time of war. Having assasins will surely deter malaysian politicians from criticising Singapore wld't it.

lets train soldiers in the SAF to be as good as Delta Force and SAS, get all soldiers (from clerks, to infantry, to armour, to engineers) airborne, diving, and JCC trained. oh, not forgetting rapelling from helicopters. on top of that, train every individual soldier in spycraft, too! last but not least, get them cross trained in every vocation in the army. infantry, driver, armour tankee, technician, medic, dog handler, combat engineer, MSD.

in addition, i suggest that MINDEF send all SAF personnel to go to Japan and learn the ways of a Ninja so all of us would be ub3r 1337 assassins too! Laughing

Only IDIOTS think BCCT teaches them any real kung fu...

But I think it serves another purpose.

Unfortunately one can't get very good in unarmed combat unless a lot of time is spent in training... and it's hard to get that in just 2 years for NSF. Some martial arts take longer then that time just to get a basic understanding.

Maybe it's a different thing for regulars, but all that BCCT stuff is the bare basics... it is good to know that at least if worst comes to worst you still have something to come up with.

I think in real life most unskilled combatants would just brawl like that scene in Saving Private Ryan. At least BCCT teaches them agressiveness and some reckless disregard for striking with your limbs... it beats have a soldier-boy who is totally helpless without his weapon.

Hey it's a 2-year service... what do you expect? And many of those recruits are bookworms would would feel faint the moment they get a nosebleed and can't kick above their knee or have ever thrown a punch in their lives.

Wah u look down at bookworm. Some of the book worm more flexible then those who go gym everyday loh. They do better than the others on sit and reach. Anyway everyone has their first NS can give them their first nosebleed.

No lah where got? I say from personal experience, looking at the Aear Level do their BCCT, and compair with the O-Level Hokkien-ping who pia-chui before wat.

I think when pitted against the Hokkien peng who have actually gone for real gang fights, most guys would have problems. Regardless of BCCT, UC or even martial arts trained. Laughing
