anyway, just to add on.. recently there was a riot in one of the village in zhejiang, china. a thousand riot police force stormed the village at night and was beaten off by angry villagers. countless of state property (police buses, riot equipment) were lost with several police chiefs in hospital. talk about waiting for the perfect moment to strike.. sigh. Sad

My opinion is that the Gurkhas will be sought to handle this kind of situations. Unless the whole country is in anarchy. well then bo pian lor!

Hypothetically speaking, if you are the standing military commander in a district where Gurkhas have been tasked to terminate the angry protesters with lethal force and you know women and children are there in the crowd, will you place your forces to shield them or let the massacre take place?

If it comes to a state where Gurkhas are ordered to restore law and order by illegal and lethal means, it's time for them to become legitimate enemy combatants as they are foreign mercenaries operating on Singapore soil.

Well, illegal can be redefined. Legitmacy can be redefined. Its up to the government. In the end, when such an incident happened. I doubt you will bother about the legal dimension and legitimacy.

The only time when the Gurkhas must be deployed to restore order in such a brutal fashion is when the ruling party has screwed up its policies so badly and turned itself into an international laughing stock.

i think this is quite a familiar incident that happend in China, the president dunno which one had done something and they had riots, the soldiers did not want to shoot into the crowd and the government was helpless, then the president sent the orphan battalion to go to the scene and did the job of chasing them back and did a very good one too…

I must confess, Wo Bu 100% Ming Bai what you are saying. Do you know what martial law means? I think you mean International law, in which case you should know that International Law is an area of law that is incredibly uncertain. And who exactly is going to charge the soldier? IMO, the International Criminal court can hardly be said to have international mandate.
