Staff and Master Sergeants

kopiosatu SG

Personally, I don’t really feel anything when I call that person Master (Name), or Staff (Name). Initially it was awkward, but now I’m so used to it that it has become quite natural to just call a MSG, Master (Name).

Gordonator SG

i thought red for RSM? Question

Kaczynski SG

I remember it was black for CSM/WSM/BSM level and GOLD/Yellow for RSM level...

My formation RSM used to have a few pace-sticks...

Master -_- SG

S&M leh? Embarassed

Gordonator SG

how come so many different colours come out liao. Shocked

red, brown, yellow, black? Question we need a expert on this. Confused

Kaczynski SG

Erm, actually I meant that there was actually only 2 colours except that people see it differently...

Gold, some may see it as yellow or brown...(The RSM's stick)

Black, some may see it as dark brown...(The CSM's stick)...

But me never seen red b4 though..

octega SG

Yep, I have to agree with this, last time during my NSF day, go encounter with this Master quite old liao, according to his men, he was stuck in Master rank for dunno how many years liao, rumour was he got drunk in mess and created a big hoo-haa.

octega SG

Mr. Green Can't image if a person's surname is Bate.....the pronunciation is very similar Mastur-bate..... image the CO sent someone to ask the Master to see him..... "Master Bate? CO wants to see you, Master Bate" Laughing

Praetorian111 SG

The correct way to address them is....

staff Sgt as staff
master as Sir

The reason is firstly in most cases, most master sgt will be promoted to warrant officers within a year time. second being that you do not address others as though you are a slave by calling them master.

Cpl used to be the rank of NCOs or what that is known as specialist. However due to the new type of rank classification that was introduce during the 1990s the rank was moved to 3rd sgt was the section commander and rank cpl and below as section man

Strictly speaking, the term Sergeant Major should not be used so liberally. It should only be used to call a person holding a CSM appointment, and not just any Staff or Master SGT

chikopek SG

But if I was not wrong only those Tekong recruits called them 'Sergeant Major' while others called them 'encik'?

tkw88 SG

The new WOSE rank structure has reduced the relative prestige of senior NCOs amongst the other ranks.

In the old times, senior NCOs = Sergeant (SGT) and above. This includes, SGT, SSG, WO2 & WO1. Section commanders were Corporals (CPL). Platoon sergeants would hold SGT rank.

Camps would have separate Senior NCO Mess and NCO Mess.

It is not unsual for regular SGTs to hold CSM appointment.

So, a three-stripe SGT in the past commanded much more respect than a present 3SG.

Well I guess the NCO corps was revamped to WOSE to create more steps for regulars to climb.

Similarly, take a look at our police force, you see so many policeman wearing 3 stripes.

LazerLordz SG

Some of those BMTC specs think they still live in the old days where their 3 stripes are royalty. All of us Specs in the units/formations and HQs, would really be amused with the way they strut around, scaring the poor recruit.LOL.

cornyfish2000 SG

Ha.. i remember my BMT platoon was even made to do pushups by the CQ (a CPL). BMTC is really the perfect place for people with inflated egos..

duajia SG

That's quite reasonable. Recruits are still the lowest lifeform in SAF.

tarutaru SG

My MOPA even made a recruit do push up becos he did not knock on the door b4 entering the MO room Laughing

react81 SG

haha, did you stop him? This guy could have come in with a fracture and your MOPA just converted a simple # into a displaced one.

gnoik SG

My unit MO also like that. But it's understandable cos when the recruits heard got fieldcamp, all rpt sick. Imagine a whole coy reporting sick.. some chao keng. i was there reporting sick and almost took 3hours b4 i could see the MO.. Crying or Very sad
