June Poetry Exercise

Since this is the first time we are doing this, lets make it very simple. Very Happy

Take an image, preferably an inanimate item, for example a fruit, a rock, a seashell, etc., and try to expand it with lots of descriptions. Tell us what this image means to you, your feelings towards it.

Give it a voice.

Squeeze emotions out from it.

Take your signature for example, "Life is like a box of chocolates, but no nuts please".

You can write about a box of chocolates, describe it, talk about the way the chocolates melt in your mouth, the texture, etc. Play around with your senses. If possible, use free verse for this exercise. Forget about rhyme and focus on the image.

For example the following poem by oceanic posted on 26 Feb 2004. Not exactly the one I am looking for but close.

A black umbrella lying at a corner
Unused, untouched for a decade
Unknown mysteries behind
Only we'll know why

The day you went away
Tears never stopped flowing then
Like a trampled rose on the ground
You lost the battle, somehow

Anniversary is here again
The years passed by simply too fast
Our longing for you each day
Never cease to pause even for a while

(In memory of my beloved Grandfather whom I missed and love and always will)

Arr..what a touching story. This thread might be a little too tough for the average singaporean. Why dont u get them to put their favourite poems down instead of getting them to creatively construct one? You do know, that for some of them thinking of one is as gd as mental suicide. Hey can you do a poem on my signature? I hope u even know the song.

Candies of many flavors,
Swirled in different colors,
Clearly you know what makes me tickle,
And woo me over with sugar....

Savoring its sweetness,
I can feel your tenderness,
This formulae you derived by chance,
works like magic all the time....

As the sun blazes on,
Sweetness soon turn sticky,
Sick with too much sugar and cholesterol,
Candy i want to see no more....

The Jetty

The jetty
Stretching out into the wide blue ocean beyond
A vision for the aspiring man
Wishing for something more
Out of life
Out of the world

Men tossing their nets into the sea
A search for untold treasures
For untold wonders
Swimming freely in the crystal blue seas
For the chance to be someone
Who can do what has to be done.

The sun soon sinks and darkness falls
Stars shine brightly in the night
The full moon rises, shining rays of hope
Illuminating the majestic jetty
Standing proudly in the distance
Reaching out into the sea.
