BTW, if we read the sutras, note that many of Buddha's disciples are already enlightened ppl. meaning they are ancient Buddhas (gu fo) already...only coming to Pretend to be Buddha's disciples so as to ask questions. they are to support Buddha teach the Truth of Dharma wan.
if not u think ordinary ppl can ask high level questions ah.. u dream ah. Cool

Pls remember that in Buddhism, although True Self is used as a word to describe Real, but in reality True Self is No Self, unlike other religions which posits that True Self has inherent existence. One such school is Hinduism, although all other religions does speak of True Self has having inherent existence, in a different way.

An Eternal Now SG

There is "past life", just as relatively speaking by clock time you may have drank coffee 3 hours ago. But reality is, it is just a continuum of the now moment. Past life memories and habits are also brought to this life, because our mental and karmic factors do succeed to this lifetime, and in fact we can even access them in deep meditation.

Life (Self) is nothing other than the continuous flow of the Now Moment.
The Now Moment ceases as it arises. This moment must completely ceased
and serves as the CAUSE for the next moment to arise.
Therefore Self is a process of series Self1, Self2, Self3, Self4, Self5, Self6...etc
A fixed entity 'Self' does not exist, what really exists is a momentary Self.
Under deep meditation, one is able to observe and sense the karmic and mental factors from moment to moment,
it is these factors that are succeeded from moment to moment and life and life but not a fixed entity.
When the karmic and mental factors subsides, it is known as "The True and Only (and Inherently egoless) Conscious Light (Itself)".

King : He who is reborn, Nagasena, is he the same person or another?

Nâgasena :Neither the same nor another.

King: Give me an illustration.

Nâgasena: In the case of a pot of milk that turns first to curds, then to butter, then to ghee; it would not be right to say that the ghee, butter and curds were the same as the milk, but they have come from that so neither would it be right to say that they are something else.

What is Reborn?

king : What is it, Nagasena;gasena, that is reborn?

Nag: Mind and matter.

king : Is it this very mind and matter that is reborn?

Nag: No, it is not, but by this mind and matter deeds are done and because of those deeds another mind and matter is reborn; but that mind and matter is not thereby released from the results of its previous deeds.

king: Give me an illustration.

Nag: It is like a fire that a man might kindle and, having warmed himself, he might leave it burning and go away. Then if that fire were to set light to another mans field and the owner were to seize him and accuse him before the king, and he were to say, Your majesty, I did not set this mans field on fire. The fire that I left burning was different to that which burnt his field. I am not guilty. Would he deserve punishment?

king: Indeed, yes, because whatever he might say the latter fire resulted from the former one.

Nag: Just so, O king, by this mind and matter deeds are done and because of those deeds another mind and matter is reborn; but that mind and matter is not thereby released from the results of its previous deeds.

from the examples it seems to me that it is indeed possible to trace a person's past lives, so generally speaking we will somewhat "reincarnate" (although it is noted that we will not be ENTIRELY the same person).
