Thank-you all for taking the time to post replies.

To some extent I understand the whole "flow" thing of a mental continuum, how I am a different self every moment, etc. At one level that makes sense.

But at another level it doesn't fit with what I have been telling myself in order to encourage myself to practise the 5 precepts. When I am tempted to do stupid things like speak unkindly I tell myself "That's just my ego or whatever wanting to show off, whereas my mental continuum is the real, important bit, the bit I will carry over into the next life ... so it is more important to avoid accumulating negative karma". I have found this way of thinking helpful ... but am I ultimately wrong to think this way then?

I really still don't think I understand it because surely even if my self is just flow and ever-changing, it is still true that if what I do in one moment affects the subsequent moments/even lives then there is some permanency in that ... like for example if I accumulate some positive karma it is like a permanent investment because it increases the future likelihood of more positive karma/good rebirth/even Enlightenment eventually?

one question regarding the point of reincarnation or rebirth -

rebirth is the word used becoz reincarnation implies a "self".

"there is no 'self' that is the same as us in the past"

if this is the case, why are there so many Buddhist stories about past lives?

hence it's also 'empty' of self-nature. in the heart sutra, even the inherent existence(zhi xin) and five aggregates are empty (ie undergo change and conditioning).

"Shariputra, whatever son or daughter of the lineage wishes to engage in the practice of the profound perfection of wisdom should look perfectly like this: subsequently looking perfectly and correctly at the emptiness of inherent existence also of the five aggregates.
"Form is empty; emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form is not other than emptiness. Likewise, feeling, discrimination, compositional factors and consciousness are empty.

What is the real self? Our Original Nature is our real self. It depends on the body temporarily; the body is not different from a house. A house is completed and then gradually deteriorates; similarly, the body has birth and death and the part in between. Our True Nature (real self), on the other hand, has neither birth nor death. It is enduring and unchanging. The teaching of Real Self and of illusory ego is basic to all Buddhadharma. When it is understood, clinging is easily broken off.

Do you see this? Why is it so difficult to get information from the Buddhists here?

Only after six pages do I get the clear unambiguos answer. And if you add the 5 pages in What is REAL? (spinoff) [page: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5] you have 11 pages. Worse of all I have to discover the answer for myself.

Sometimes I seriously wonder if the people in this forum know what they are doing.

Or are you going to tell me that this is not the answer?

If you agree that this is the answer to the question "What is REAL in Buddhism," we can move on to other things....

so u want it to be Original Nature to be real? the posts got mentioned Dharmakaya and Zhen Ru Ben Xing and Thus Come One and Tathagata, but u still ask, so thought u still don't know. maybe that's the disadvantage of keep asking. Smile nvm move on....

To reiterate, the Buddha's view was that all sentient beings have the same virtue and the same wisdom as the Tathagata - the pure, luminous virtue of Dharma-dhatu. However, the sentient beings are confused, do not return to their Original Nature and do not purify the Dharma-kaya and therefore they are called sentient beings, or different from buddhas.

You must come step by step... first you must understand that your human body is "empty;" samsara is "empty."

Next you must understand that your human body and all that comes with it, the senses and the perceptions and the thoughts and the conclusions and the assumptions and your ego are all "empty." All not real.

Then you must ask yourself what is REAL.

Only then, when you are very clear about that, only after you are very clear about what is REAL then you start to talk about "Tathagata - the pure, luminous virtue of Dharma-dhatu."

Otherwise, you are just one big confused person.

I just wanted to know where it says so in Buddhist scriptures or authority/reference. Instead of getting a clear direct answer, I get lots of confusing nonsensical stuff (just my opinion, apologies.)

more than that. at one point of Dharma...it mean stilling the mind or not to move the mind. judging is moving the mind liao. asking is moving the mind liao. Wink
judging is a form of attachment to 'self'; attach to 'MY' viewpoint is right per se.
it's also abt Cause and effect too.
