Dooku was the man behind the Separatist movement which sought to
destabilise the Republic. After capturing Obi-wan at one such
Separatist meeting in Geonosis, Dooku told Obi-wan that the
Republic was gradually falling under Sith control (not far from the
truth), and invited Obi-wan to join him in the rebellion against
the Republic.
In reality, the scheming Dooku had already secretly sworn
allegiance to the Sith order. He was only making use of the
Separatist movement and the subsequent Clone Wars to distract the
Jedi and to give his master -- Chancellor Palpatine or Darth
Sidious the opportunity to build a vast army of clones needed for
his empire.
Little did he know that he shall soon be succeeded by another Sith
apprentice.
