Rhonda SG Thanks for responding! I'm quite out-of-touch with the latest offerings when it comes to home PC's but I will be getting one when I return to Melbourne. I'm looking at a particular model but would love to know what those in the know think of the PC specs. Basically, I need the PC for surfing the web, for working on projects and assignments, for playing MP3's and CD's, and for playing computer games like The Sims 2. The Home PC I'm looking at has the following specifications : Processor *Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6320 Operating system Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium or Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition (I definitely intend to choose the XP cause I don't wanna be a Vista Guinea Pig! ) Memory 2GB(2x1GB) DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz Harddrive 320GB SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Monitor 20" Widescreen Flat Panel LCD Monitor Graphic Card 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 7300LE TurboCache™ Optical Device 16X Max DVD+/-RW Combo Drive with Dual Layer Write Capabilities (Burn/play DVDs and CDs) Sooo... thanks for scrutinising this list for me! Do you think that this PC will be able to meet my needs? I will consider every opinion given. Ta!
ndmmxiaomayi SG Nicely without problems, provided you are not using Vista. Tell the manufacturer you want a hard disk with no OS installed, then purchase an XP CD to install. There's no way to go back to XP is Vista is installed, because Microsoft says so. And the trick to revert back has been taken offline. I have no idea why, maybe because it's against the rules...
Rhonda SG OIC. Hey, thanks a lot for the advice! I have heard enough complaints from end users about Vista so I'm not going to deal with their bugs. I'm just going to stick to XP.
laurence82 SG Original XP worth more than Vista anyway got my boss to help me get XP and Office CD from JB
Rhonda SG Don't think I'm such a sophisticated user who will need dual booting! I'm happy enough just having a PC, any functional PC, after a one-year hiatus! Besides, which two operating systems are you referring to? XP and Linux? I know not how to use Linux at all it'll be XP all the way for me. As for Vista, I'm not going anywhere near it!
Rhonda SG Oh yeah... Microsoft Office. These days, you kinda have to pay through your nostrils for the full version. I hate the Home Editions, btw. Bleah!
Rhonda SG Y'know, the design just looks... wrong. I prefer the thing to have a few buttons so it'll at least look a bit more 'real' and functional. Sorry, but minimalist designs don't turn me on. I want the thing to look sophisticated, not soul-less.
the Bear SG that's the Apple Mac-Mini... probably the most powerful thing in a lunchbox you'll ever have dual-boot? OSX and xp
dbowie SG yes, should be enough to meet your needs like mayi said. i read on gizmodo, mac mini is going to be discontinued,?!
Rhonda SG OK, a few more questions... If I want to fix my PC to view TV programs, what do I need? Is it a hardware or a software, or both? Is it easy to install and configure a PC to do this, in your opinion? Is it easy to then record TV programs onto the HDD?
ndmmxiaomayi SG Both. You need a TV tuner card (hardware). Then you install the necessary drivers (software). Following the instructions should be easy to use. Although you might want to use a separate hard disk, because it can burn out the space pretty fast.
<Precious> SG Just when I tot my home pc is all souped up, Rhonda's new toy makes me feel mine is in need of an overhaul liao! Rhonda, is your new pc a duo core or quad core?
Rhonda SG It's already up in the specs... says duo. I haven't bought it yet... just have set my eyes on it. THink I'll wait for the Mid-Year Sales in Melbourne and see if the price drops further. Currently, with the add-on's and service package I want, it seems like this PC might exceed A$3K!
the Bear SG i dunno.. cult leader kinda seems to insist on being chopped radish head.. told her for $3k can get a pretty decent iMac which will dual-boot xp...
