the Bear SG yeah.. actually was waiting until the leopard was released before buying the iMac but my little VAIO blew up... so i needed a computer.. bought one.. it's serves me fine left it on for a month one time.. there was absolutely no slowdown or anything.. the only grouse i have is with the stupid mouse..
the Bear SG it was worse then unions were running rampant then.. freighting things from tassie to melbourne was harder, longer and more expensive than freighting stuff from tassie to taiwan throw everything in a DHL box and let them do it for you
the Bear SG the mouse is pretty.. it's also pretty useless their keyboard could do with better feel too.. too hard.. they should go look at the sony keyboards
ndmmxiaomayi SG Their keyboards... hmm... great. But I guess I'm too picky. It looks awfully flat to me, especially with my height, it only serves to make things worse.
TehJarVu SG dua boot means likely she is going to use the section that runs on windows xp, and that section needs anti-virus, and she needs to buy windows xp software to install also.... unless she is going to buy the apple and use only the osx
the Bear SG use OSX for everything else.. use xp to play games i mean, OSX beats xp in everything else... but the game publishers support windoze.. except for blizzard which writes for both
the Bear SG i've been running my OSX without firewall or anti-virus since i bought it.. kopi's been doing the same for his PowerBook... we're clean.. i think there has been ONE virus for the Mac which was killed within hours... and that was many many years ago so, the answer is: no... you just have to look after the vulnerable part: the xp part
TehJarVu SG the section running on osx doesn't need anti-virus but the section that runs on windows still need, becos if this section gets infected, it may affect the section that runs on osx also...
JLennon SG I still run my OSX with a firewall but did not bother with anti-virus. There are reports (not sure verified or not) that for some reason, certain anti-virus actually messes up the OSX and cause minor malfunction. Personally I just rely on Apple to upgrade the security. Bear, is there a visible difference in performance when running XP on a Mac? Not sure whether to invest in the XP or not.
ndmmxiaomayi SG Not unless you are paranoid... or if you do risky stuffs or likes clicking on everything... Personally, I can live without a firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware programs, but due to the nature of my work, I do irritate quite a few people, so I need to get my system as secure as possible.
JLennon SG For gaming lah.... I read in the reviews that the purpose of the parallels is NOT in gaming. I thought for a moment you were using a dual-OS system.
whitsundays SG Hi Rhonda, I supposed you are looking at the dell 9200 system. It is a quite a decent system with the exception of the anti virus software. Before you start signing it with your credit card, you might want to check your salary package. Certain organisation allows salary sacrifice for computers, cars and other items. You can claim your taxes for depreciation on your computer if you claim that you used it for work.
Rhonda SG I've done my homework already! Only laptops can be claimed via salary packaging. PC's can be claimed via tax rebate and for every year thereafter, depreciation can be claimed. And yes, I was looking at the Dell 9200, how did you know? I was only going for those that they can customise with the XP though. But now, after listening to the guys here talk about dual systems in the Apple and the OSX being relatively virus-free, I'm having second thoughts. It's so hard to make a decision on PC's, esp when you don't know a lot, like me!
Rhonda SG Y'know, thanks to all of you for responding to this thread. I now have a clearer idea of what to get. One more question though - do you think it's worthwhile to pay an extra AUD27.50 for a 13-in-1 USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Media Card Reader? Actually, I don't really know what that is! Is that for inserting our SD cards, etc?
